Attendance:

Attendance is not mandatory, but without attendance you cannot participate in discussion, nor will you know about some opportunities. Therefore, you endanger 10 percentage points of y= our grade by disappearing.

Midterm:

The midterm will be take home. It will consist of 5 identifications and one essay. The instructor will provide a choice of 10 identifications and 2 ess= ays. It will by typed or word processed, double spac= ed, use reasonable fonts (10 point or 12 point), and be footnoted. Use the department style guide or Turabian. =

Paper or Po= werpoint presentation: undergraduates have the choice of an extended powerpoint or paper on the topic of their choice within the class’s purview. Will be due by April 13th

Participation Papers<= /b> are 2 page written responses to videos, activities, etc. They will be unannounced. You can choose which ones to do. THERE WILL BE THREE OF THEM. The MANDATORY PARTICIPATION PAPER WILL BE ON THE MANDATORY CUBAN MISSILE CRISIS SIMULATION.

Discussion:

In class discussion is important, and I use it to decide whom to bump up. There will also be a mandatory panel activity based topics chosen by the instructor.

Graduate Students will not write participation papers. They will do an in class presentation. They will writ= e three 2 page book reviews (use template in course information) and one 15-20 page secondary source paper on the topic of their choice. They will write the midterm only. Graduate students are responsible for answering questions in Desire2Learn.

Discussion Boards

I will check to make sure that people answer the questions on the bulletin board and comment at least once= on someone's answers to the posted questions. The comment can be a question, o= r an extension, or a civil challenge to the discussion. The discussion questions will be based on possible midterm and finals questions. This class will use Desire2Learn, a web intranet system.

Undergraduates will post three reactions/comments to the mandatory discussions(mandatory , etc. on the bulletin board und= er "Reaction paper: (title of article or activity). These reaction commen= ts should incorporate reading and notes into their discussion of the article's problems and/or good characteristics..

Graduate students= will write one twenty page paper on the topic of their choice, and will turn in three 2500 word (3 page maximum) book reviews duri= ng the eight weeks. They will vet their books with me first. I must approve th= eir major paper topic by week 4. This is a secondary source research paper. Twe= nty page paper due to me (emailed) by Wednesday, Dec 15^th. Book reviews are due any time before Thursday, Decembe= r 9^th. . SAMPLE MIDTERM QUESTIONS

1. Was the McCarthy era avoidabl= e? Analyze the 1945-1955 period with an emphasis on social, political, and economic issues. What was the effect of ideology, and what was the effect of fear? Why was US law modified, how was it justified, and was it unconstitutional?

2. What was 1950s culture really= like. Compare the image to the reality.

3. was the Civil Rights Movement successful in the 50s' and 60s"? Compare the goals, methods, and accomplishments of the 1950s Civil Rights movement with the 1960-64 Civil Rights movement. What were the differences? What happened to whites who left the movement?

The Final will consist of five (= 5) identifications (25% of exam), one (1) comprehensive essay (50%), and one (= 1) second half of the class essay.

1. Trace the evolution of either= the Civil Rights or the women's movement from 1945 through the early 1990s. Dis= cuss the role this social movement played in bringing about political change. Wa= s it successful? What other factors were responsible for successes or failures?<= o:p>

2. In the 1870s, the United Stat= es had almost no overseas interests and perceived almost no threat from abroad= . In the 1970s and 80s, the U.S. had not only interests but large military forces all over the world and perceived a number of threats from abroad. Examine t= he major shifts in American foreign policy that brought about this change. Your answ= er should address such issues as imperialism/expansion, isolationism, interventionism, and containment.

3. Compare and contrast the two "hot" wars of the Cold War: the Korean Conflict and the Vietnam conflict. Were these wars worth the cost of the American lives? Can the U.S. fight limited wars? Emphasize the effects on the home front, especially in assessing political, social, and economic goals and effects.

Sample Second half of the class essay

1. Many people today claim that = the Sixties were responsible for all of today's societies' ills. Is it true? Wh= at is the reality and image of the 1960s? Compare and contrast media and polit= ical images of the family, the country, politics (including Vietnam), students, women, minorities, drugs, sex, and heroes with the realities. Who was emphasized, and who is left out?

2. Were U.S. strategies, sacrifi= ces, governmental treatment of citizens, and goals during the Cold War justified, necessary, and moral? Analyze U.S. goals during the Cold War, U.S. resources (including domestic stability), U.S. liabilities (including McCarthyism), U= .S. achievements, and losses (including Vietnam). Look at civil defense, the me= dia, etc. As we enter the 1990s, what have we gained, and what have we lost? What other methods could have been used?

3. Why did we fight in Vietnam, and could we have won? Was Vietnam important to U.S. global strate= gic goals, or "just worthless real estate"? Assess and describe U.S. strategy in terms of morale, goals, tactics, importance, who fought, and ho= me front views? Why did the U.S. lose?
