Blugold Beginnings and 5th Grade Tour Day are funded by grants, sponsors, and donations. The 5th Grade Campus Tour Day is a field trip for fifth graders to be introduced to the idea of college and experience a university campus on a personal level. The tour allows students to explore a variety of activities on campus such as the residence halls, academic buildings, and experience a special class demonstration created just for them taught by UWEC faculty. Small groups of fifth graders are paired with two college mentors for the day. These mentors serve as their guide to the university. Students are encouraged to ask questions about the university, discuss future academic plans, and explore what areas on campus they find interesting.
Fifth grade teachers and staff are invited to attend a Professional Development Session to learn about new and helpful resources available to them and their students.
UWEC mentors conduct a pre and post visit at each participating elementary school. Mentors visit fifth grade classrooms before Tour Day to connect with students, get them excited, and inform them about Tour Day. After the event, mentors will again go into the 5th grade classrooms to re-connect with the students, answer questions, and review what they learned.
