Blugold Beginnings

Welcome Teachers

Common Goal

The support of teachers is crucial for Blugold Beginnings to be successful and make a difference. We are all working for the common goal of educating Wisconsin's youth. Pre-college preparation is a critical piece to opening doors for students to reach their goals and be successful.   All students deserve access to resources and services to further support the path to higher education.  By introducing the idea of post secondary education at an early age, it will further inform and inspire students of their options after high school and the benefits that come with higher education.

Tour Day 2013

1600 fifth grade students will tour campus on April 25th & 26th, 2013

A teacher handboook is provided to all teachers to assist with explaining Tour Day, how to register and includes permission slips. Teachers will register their individual classes online beginning in the Spring semester.. The registration gathers teacher contact information, number of lunches, t-shirt sizes, special needs, organizing student groups, pre/post visit sign ups, professional development topic vote etc.

Contact the Program Director, Lissa Martinez, for the Online Registration Link at martinlj@uwec.edu

This program was created to support the specific needs and wants of each individual site, elementary through high school. Each site may have different requests in which our program is flexible to fulfill. Schedules will be determined by what times are available and approved during and after school or according to the student's individual schedule.

How the Program Works:

At the 5th grade level, each school will have a UW-Eau Claire student Site Coordinator to supervise the Blugold Beginnings mentors and assist with program operations. Our Blugold Beginnings mentors meet with their mentee throughout the week to help them in whatever way is most beneficial, as determined by the mentor/mentee, teachers, guidance counselors and parents. The Blugold Beginnings mentors can be role models on the play ground, give one on one attention during class time, or help with homework after school.

All student participanting with programming during the academic year, 5th - 12th grade, should be referred to the program by their parents, teachers, principals or guidance counselors. Blugold Beginnings depends on these groups to identify eligible students.

At the middle and high school level, each school will have a team of UW-Eau Claire mentors working with students on and off school grounds. Mentors usually spend approximately five hours a week with their student, depending on the student's and mentor's availability. They can meet at the school, on the UW-Eau Claire campus or even in the student's home. Support services are provided for study skills, homework help, ACT preparation, post secondary education, college scholarship applications and post-secondary applications. High school students also participate in monthly activities on campus.

All middle and high school students must complete a permission slip in order to participate with monthly events. This permission slip is different than Tour Day permission slips.

Elementary schools allow Mentors to assist during lunch and recess time developing teambuilding, social and leadership activities for students. After school, Mentors support study clubs providing homework help, college knowledge discussions, career exploration and promoting higher education. Elementary student participants stay on school grounds for all activities.
