The program includes campus tour days and events where students have the opportunity to visit the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire campus, allowing them to become comfortable in a university setting. The main focus of these events and the program is to inspire a student’s belief that higher education is important and attainable because support is available.
Mentors will supervise and guide students during all activities and campus tours. This time allows students to bond with their mentors and ask questions about how they became a part of the university.
Welcome Students!
Blugold Beginnings privides several social/informational events for participating students throughout the year. These events are an opportunity for students and their mentors to connect on a personal level while becoming comfortable on a college campus. These events also provide a time for students to connect with other students to provide peer support. These events give students a hands-on experience of campus life at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire in a fun and structured way.
Blugold Beginnings and the Tour Day event are funded by grants, sponsors and donations. There is no cost for students, teachers or schools to participate. The Fifth Grade Campus Tour Day is a field trip day for fifth graders to be introduced to the idea of college and experience a university campus on a personal level. The tour allows students to explore a variety of activities on campus such as the residence halls, academic buildings and experience a special class demonstration created just for them taught by UWEC faculty. Groups of fifth graders, five to seven per group, are paired with two college Mentors for the day. These Mentors serve as their guide to the university. Students are encouraged to ask questions about the university, discuss future academic plans and explore what areas on campus they find interesting.
Fifth grade teachers and staff are invited to attend a Profession Development session to learn about new and helpful resources available to them and their students.
UWEC Mentors will visit fifth grade classrooms before the event to get the students excited and prepared for Tour Day. After the event, Mentors will again go into the 5th grade classrooms to re-connect with the students, answer questions and review what they learned.
