Dr. Kris Retherford, who is serving as Chairperson in the Department, joined our faculty in the fall of 1980. She was granted her baccalaureate degree in speech pathology from Mankato State University in 1973. She also attended UW-Madison from which she was granted her master's degree in 1977 and her doctorate in 1980. Dr. Retherford has worked as a speech and language clinician in the public schools for two years, and as a teacher of the trainable mentally retarded for one year in a state hospital.

Dr. Retherford's major clinical interests are normal language development, developmental language disorders, especially in the preschool population and among autistic children. She teaches undergraduate courses in normal communication development, clinical procedures in communication disorders, and graduate seminars in pediatric organic communication disorders and developmental language disorders. She supervises clinical practicum in the Center for Communication Disorders and served as Director of Clinical Programs in Communication Disorders from 1988 to 1995. Prior to that, she served as Director of Graduate Students in Communication Disorders for three years.

Dr. Retherford has published the Guide to Analysis of Language Transcripts (3/e), Guide Applied, and Normal Communication Acquisition: An animated database of behaviors with Thinking Publications.
