Asperger's Syndrome

Post-Secondary Education Information

For most individuals with Asperger's syndrome, educational opportunity following high school is an important and viable option.Whether the individual seeks to develop an area of interest through a technical college program or desires a bachelors, masters, and/or doctoral degree from a university program, instruction beyond high school is often possible and necessary.

Three important considerations to keep in mind as choices related to post-high school education made include:

1. Family Support
When selecting a destination for post-high school education, having family nearby may be essential for a young adult with Asperger's syndrome. Be certain to consider the need for access to this resource.

2. Institutional Support/Services
All post-high school educational agencies are bound by the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and must make reasonable accommodations and provide support services for recognized disabilities. Asperger's syndrome may definitely apply in this situation. Investigate options for accommodations at each school being considered.

Some campuses do more than simply comply with ADA. Check out the Marshall University Model College Program at the West Virginia Autism Training Center for an example of a university program that is specifically geared toward providing imporant supports for young adults with Asperger's syndrome and autism. Closer to west-central Wisconsin, the UW--Eau Claire Services for Students with Disablities program offers a solid example for compliance to ADA in higher education.

3. Areas of Interest
Working to an individual's strengths and following areas of interest, talent, and expertise is critical. Closely investigate training program options at the schools being considered.
