REGISTRATION POLICIES
Credit Load
During the Summer Session, you may carry one credit per week of attendance. For example, in eight weeks, you may take eight credits; in four weeks, you may take four credits. An audit is counted as part of your total credit load. To enroll for a credit overload, you must request permission for overload from the dean of your college. You must have the Dean's permission before you will be allowed to register for an overload. note : overload approval is granted only in special circumstances.
Double-Numbered Courses
For courses which are double-numbered, only those for which the 500 or 600 numbers appear in the schedule of classes are available for graduate credit. For double-numbered courses that have several sections, only those with a “G” after the section number are available for graduate credit at the 500 or 600 level. Graduate students who enroll for double-numbered courses will be automatically registered at the graduate (500, 600) level. Graduate students who wish to enroll in such courses for undergraduate credit, should contact Registration Services, Schofield Hall 128, to have the registration processed.
GENERAL INFORMATION
Classified Status
New or transfer graduate students who wish to pursue a program toward a degree should submit an application for admission to the Admissions office by May 1. You must also provide the necessary documents of previous college and university work as outlined in the Graduate Catalogue. Some graduate programs have additional application requirements and deadlines. For more specific information, refer to the Graduate Catalogue or contact the department offering the program.
Special Student Status
Students wanting to register for graduate credit, but not wanting to seek admission either in a degree program, may register as “Special” students. Graduate special students should make particular note that registration may not be allowed in graduate courses leading directly to credit toward the MBA and MSN degrees. Approval for registration in such courses is typically allowed only for those admitted to the programs. For a special student to register for such a course, permission of the respective offices will be required.
Credits may be earned as a special graduate student; however, the University makes no commitment to apply such credits to degree programs or requirements. When a special student is admitted to a degree program, no more than 12 previously earned credits may be applied to the requirements for the degree.

FINANCIAL AID
APPLICATION PROCESS
To receive financial aid for the 2008 Summer Session, you must submit the following forms to the Financial Aid office:
1. Summer Financial Aid application — available on MyBlugold. If you are not able to access MyBlugold, contact the Financial Aid office, Schofield Hall 115, (715) 836-3373.
2. Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)— 2007-2008 FAFSA is required to apply for Summer 2008 financial aid.
FINANCIAL RESPONSIBILITY
All financial aid for summer (loans, grants, scholarships) will be disbursed to you when your classes begin and must be used to meet educational costs. A required down payment of $100 must be received by the Business office prior to registration. Interim and Summer Session financial aid cannot be used to pay this $100 down payment.
Students with extreme personal circumstances may request a deferment of the $100 down payment by completing the Request for Deferment Form which will be available in the Financial Aid office during the priority registration period.
Payments of the remaining university costs after the $100 deposit are due when your classes begin. You must be able to pay the remaining balance from personal resources unless you have signed a Financial Aid Award Notification before the beginning of summer classes and the notification contains enough loan and/or grant assistance to cover tuition.
AWARD LEVEL
The amount of aid awarded is based on the estimated total credits for which you will enroll, your length of enrollment, and your housing status during Summer Session. Any changes in the above information should be reported to the Financial Aid office immediately. Registration for less credits than you projected, change in your housing status, change in your length of enrollment, or the receipt of additional financial aid (scholarship, etc.) may require an adjustment of your financial aid.
CREDIT LEVELS
Undergraduate students with at least five credits, and graduate students with at least four credits, are considered enrolled for halftime or more for summer.
Students must be enrolled in at least three credits to be considered for aid or to receive disbursements of summer aid. Undergraduate students enrolled in three or four credits, or graduate students enrolled in three credits, are considered “less than halftime.” Less than halftime students are not eligible for Direct Ford Loan but may be considered for Perkins Loan and Work Study based on funds available. In determining financial aid for students enrolled for less than halftime, room and board and personal expenses are not included. Consequently, students qualify for significantly less aid if their enrollment status is less than halftime.
Implications of Dropping Classes
The number of credits for which a student enrolls and the length of the student's combined classes determine eligibility for aid. If you drop classes, eligibility for aid may change. You may be required to repay some or all of the financial aid received if enrolled credits change after aid has been disbursed.
REQUIRED SAVINGS UNDER WORK STUDY
If you are employed under the Federal College Work Study (CWS) program during the summer but not enrolled for Summer Session, all or part of your summer earnings must be counted as a resource to help pay the cost of attending college for the fall. Some of your summer expenses may help reduce the amount of your summer earnings that are counted as a resource. You can report your expenses with the “Student Summer Expense Information” form that is available at the Financial Aid office. If you do not complete this form, it will be assumed that 100% of your summer earnings should be counted as a resource for fall. This may reduce your eligibility for other aid for the 2008-2009 academic year.
REPAYMENT OF FINANCIAL AID IF YOU WITHDRAW
If you withdraw from the University before 60 percent of your summer enrollment period has been completed, the University is required to determine the amount of your federal and state financial aid (other than work-study) that must be returned. The amount of aid you may keep when you withdraw is in direct proportion to the length of time you remained enrolled during the term. You may owe a repayment of your financial aid even though you are not eligible for a refund of your tuition. The University will notify you of the dollar amount owed.
STANDARDS OF SATISFACTORY ACADEMIC PROGRESS FOR FINANCIAL AID - SUMMARY
Federal regulations require the University to develop and apply a consistent and reasonable standard of satisfactory progress for all students receiving federal financial aid. These standards are applied to all periods of attendance, regardless of whether a student has received financial aid in the past. There are three standards or components of satisfactory progress:
- minimum GPA,
- minimum credits completed, and
- maximum time frame.
Standard for Grade Point Average
Students must maintain a resident and semester GPA of 2.00 or higher as explained in the University's Academic Standing and Progress Policy. Students on academic warning or probation are allowed to receive financial aid.
Standard for Minimum Credits Completed
Students must successfully complete 67 percent of their enrolled credits. Failing a class or maintaining an incomplete in a class is not considered successfully completing the class.
Standard for Maximum Time Frame
Undergraduate students may receive financial aid for a maximum of 180 attempted credits when enrolled in degree programs which have a published minimum requirement for graduation of 120 credits. Attempted credits are enrolled credits for the semester. All accepted transfer credits are also considered attempted credits. A degree program that requires more than 120 credits is an exception and financial aid eligibility may be extended. An additional 90 credits of financial aid eligibility is allowed for undergraduate students seeking a second degree. Graduate students are allowed 54 credits, which represents three years of full-time enrollment.
For Audited Courses
Students may not receive financial aid for audited courses; however, audited courses are counted in the calculation for maximum time frame.
Monitoring Procedures and Reestablishment Options
These standards are monitored once a year at the end of spring semester, using Registrar's information. Future financial aid will be denied for students who fail to meet the standards of academic progress.
Students may reestablish their financial aid eligibility by earning an academic standing that meets the above criteria. Students with extenuating circumstances that prevented them from making satisfactory progress are encouraged to describe and document those circumstances in writing. Their appeal will be reviewed by the financial aid counselor responsible for satisfactory academic progress to determine whether financial aid eligibility should be reinstated. Before any appeal is denied, it will be reviewed by the Financial Aid office Appeals Committee. Students will be notified in writing of the appeal decision. For a copy of the complete policy, contact the Financial Aid office or see the Financial Aid office Web site at: http://www.uwec.edu/Finaid/.

GRADUATION
All candidates must apply for graduation. This can be done on the Web using MyBlugold. Undergraduate candidates for August graduation must apply by February 15, 2008. Students seeking a Master's or a Specialist degree must apply by June 13, 2008.
The commencement ceremony will be held at 9:30 a.m. on August 2 in W. L. Zorn Arena. Tickets are not necessary for the August ceremony. You are welcome to invite as many guests as you wish. Graduation regalia can be picked up year-round at the University Bookstore “Grad Center” located on the lower level. Graduates can also purchase diploma frames, commencement announcements, honor cords, tassels, and thank you cards.
IDENTIFICATION CARD
University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire photo identification cards are issued and replaced at the Service Center in Davies Center. The Blugold Card—the official photo identification card of the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire—is issued to students as a privilege of their affiliation with the University. There is no charge for the first Blugold Card; replacing a lost, stolen, or damaged card costs $10. Blugold Cards are retained throughout undergraduate enrollment. Spouses or partners of students may obtain a Blugold Card for $10.
The Blugold Card enables students to access their meal plan and the Blugold Account debit card system. Funds may be deposited to meal plans and Blugold Accounts at the Service Center office; at value transfer stations in Chancellors Hall, Davies Center, Haas Fine Arts Center, Hilltop Center, Human Sciences and Services, and Towers Hall; and via the Internet.
The Blugold Card also entitles the bearer use of McIntyre Library and other campus facilities, reduced ticket prices for many campus events and activities, and free use of the Eau Claire Transit System. A booklet completely describing the privileges of the Blugold Card is available from the Service Center.
With a Blugold Account, advance deposits are made to an account that can be used in all university dining facilities and at many service areas campuswide. A Blugold Account is required for use of laundry facilities in residence halls.
Through a partnership between UW-Eau Claire and U.S. Bank, UW-Eau Claire students are invited to open a free U.S. Bank checking account and attach it to their Blugold Card, which will then act as an ATM and signature debit card for off-campus purchases.
Students may register for online access to their Blugold Account and meal plan (www.uwec.edu/blugoldcard). Essential information may be given to parents or anyone who will make online deposits to the accounts using MasterCard or VISA.
Blugold Card production hours and meal plan sign-up are available online (www.uwec.edu/blugoldcard) or by calling (715) 836-4070.
INSTRUCTIONAL RESOURCE RENTAL
UW-Eau Claire undergraduate students may obtain textbooks from the University Bookstore's Instructional Resource Rental Department, located in Davies Center, by presenting a valid Blugold Card. Because a designated portion of undergraduate tuition funds the IRR Department, students enrolled in “graduate only” courses (numbered 700 and over) must purchase all resources for their classe s. Only one copy of each textbook may be taken.
Textbooks will be available for pickup starting May 19, 2008.
Students may buy any of the resources in the Instructional Resource Rental Department — even those used in courses they may not be taking at the time. A purchase period is set each term, when students may buy rental materials for 25 percent off the replacement price. The summer session purchase period is June 16-July 18, 2008.
Students must return all of their rental materials by the last day of final exams or they will be fined. All summer semester rental materials must be returned by August 1, 2008.
CDs, manuals, study guides, and other media that come as a set with textbooks must be returned with the textbooks. Students will be required to pay the replacement price for the complete textbook set if all materials in the set are not returned.
Hours of operation for the University Bookstore and the Instructional Resource Rental Department are available online (www.uwec.edu/bookstore) or by calling (715) 836-2171.
