Alum named 2013 Kathryn Etter School Nurse of the Year

Sharon Triller Kaltenberg, class of 1978, received the 2013 Kathryn Etter School Nurse of the Year Award from the Wisconsin Association of School Nurses. Ms. Kaltenberg had been a school nurse for the Hudson School District until her retirement in June 2013. She credits her mother, who was a school nurse, and Ms. Marilyn Burgess, one of her nursing faculty instructors at UW-Eau Claire, for sparking her interest in school nursing. She also credits in part the excellent educational background she received at UW-Eau Claire in providing a framework for receiving this award.
College receives grant to increase the number of primary care nurse
practitioners in region

Dr. Debra Jansen received a grant award through the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) Advanced Education Nursing Traineeship program. This award will provide financial support for the costs of full-time tuition and fees, books, and reasonable living expenses (2014-2016) for full-time post-baccalaureate DNP students with an NP role preparation at UW-Eau Claire.

Dr. Lisa Schiller receives Wisconsin Department of Public Health award

Dr. Lisa Schiller, College of Nursing and Health Sciences faculty member, received an award for $8,749 from the Wisconsin Department of Public Health. The project is titled "Partners in Health and Safety." The goal is to build cultural competence among nursing undergraduates, promote agricultural health and safety, and provide health screening and immunizations for farm workers in Buffalo and Pepin counties. Undergraduates will be involved in the research.
Faculty, staff receive Nontraditional Student Services CARE recognition

The Nontraditional Student Services office at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire recently honored UW-Eau Claire faculty and staff through the Concern for Adults Returning to Education (CARE) recognition program. Several nursing faculty and staff were included in the list of nominees, including Debra Hofmann, assistant professor of nursing, Lorraine Smith, assistant to the dean, and all faculty and staff of Bachelor of Science and Nursing Completion Program. Congratulations!
Scholarly Project Presentations, May 6th

The annual Scholarly Project Day in Nursing is scheduled for Tuesday, May 6th, 2014. MSN graduates will present their research beginning at 1:00 p.m. and continuing until about 4:00 p.m. All the presentations will be in the College of Nursing and Health Sciences building in Eau Claire in rooms 119 and 119A. A celebratory reception will immediately follow the presentations in the Learning Resource Center (LRC) in the nursing building.
Kaleidoscope of Nursing Research Day, May 9th

College mourns passing of Tina M. Emerson

Tina Emerson, MSN, RN passed away on April 20, 2014 after a lengthy illness. Tina was a nursing advisor and clinical Instructor for the College of Nursing and Health Sciences. Her memorial service will take place Saturday, April 26, 2014 at 11 a.m. in Menomonie at the Menomonie United Methodist Church. She will be missed by her colleagues and students.
Students to present on immersion experience in El Salvador

Students who traveled to El Salvador earlier this spring will share their experience during a presentation on Thursday, May 8th from 3:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m. in rooms EC119A / MF 124. Led by Dean Linda Young and Dr. Jill Fernandes, eight senior nursing students from NSG 422 participated in the pilot immersion experience.
Lesson Study Members Receive 2014 WAAL Information Literacy Award

UW-Eau Claire nursing faculty and librarians are this year's recipients of the Wisconsin Association of Academic Librarians Information Literacy Award. Through collaboration and the use of the study lesson process, members of CONHS and McIntyre Library examined their teaching over time to improve student understanding of evidence-based practice and information literacy skills.
Student Researcher Receives Award

Kate Guffy was awarded honorable mention at the recent Midwestern Nursing Research Society conference for her research poster, "Essential Leadership Concepts and Behaviors Baccalaureate Nursing Students Need". Kate collaborated with a fellow student, Sara Peterson, and Dr. Charlotte Sortedahl.

Students Travel to El Salvador

College of Nursing and Health Sciences students traveled to El Salvador for a pilot immersion experience. The group led by Dr. Linda Young, Dean of the College and Dr. Jill Hecker Fernandes visited a number of facilities, including a school and hospital.
Visiting Scholar from China

This spring the College of Nursing and Health Science welcomes Visiting Nurse Scholar, Gong Hairong (Helen) from the Fujian Health College located in Fuzhou, China. This visit will give Gong Hairong an opportunity to experience curriculum, simulation and research approaches employed within our college. Her visit will also expand the cultural understanding within CONHS and deepen education connections for faculty and students.
