The purpose of this e-newsletter is to keep you informed about the transitions and continuing developments within the College and University.

Faculty, Staff and Department Updates

This section, a new addition to Transitions, is designed to keep us all informed of COEHS faculty and staff activities. Department Chairs will send out a call for items to be included each month, so please share information about your recent activities.

Steve Dempsey, SPED, was recently appointed by Andy Phillips, Interim Associate Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, to serve on the university committee which will be preparing the UW-Eau Claire accreditation self-study for the Higher Learning Commission (HLC) of the North Central Association visit in 2009. Steve is a peer reviewer for HLC, which accredits institutions of higher education in 19 states. The university will fund his trip to the HLC-NCA Conference in Chicago in March.

Tamara Lindsey, C&I, will be working on another U.S. Department of Education ESEA Improving Teacher Quality for grant which COEHS was awarded $64,814. Karen Horan, art education emerita, is the principal investigator for this visual literacy project.

Tim Lippold, CSD, received a course development award from Academic Affairs  this semester to develop a CSD undergraduate course in basic audiology as an online course for summer.

Joe Morin, SPED, received $39, 538 in funding for an U.S. Department of Education ESEA Improving Teacher Quality grant entitled M-zone: Enchancing teachers of mathematics’ ability to accommodate students with language-based learning disabilities. This grant will bring teachers of mathematics together to work collaboratively with special education teachers to acquire effective methodologies for addressing the language needs of students with language-based learning disabilities.

Other noteworthy news

Student poster printing/plotting

Students and faculty preparing their faculty/student collaborative research posters now have access to poster printing/plotting in LTS. This opportunity is being funded through combined resources from the Interim Provost, the College Deans, and beginning next year Differential Tuition.

Developing Minds for 21st Century Challenges: A Campus and Community Discussion about University Education—February 27

This event, coordinated by Don Christian, Dean of Arts and Sciences, is scheduled 6:30-8:30 p.m. Monday, February 27 in the Two Rivers Ballroom, Plaza Hotel. The goal of this event is to provide a forum for discussion about what really matters in a college or university education in a highly competitive, rapidly changing, knowledge-based economy and society. An excellent panel of speakers will frame the issues from various perspectives.

Quantitative Literacy Conference—March 10

UW-River Falls is hosting an OPID-sponsored conference on Quantitative Literacy on March 10 from 9:30 a.m. to 3:00 pm. The conferene synopsis describes Quantitative Literacy as mathematics in context and the invited speakers will address ways to integrate QL into their curricula through various strategies by sharing their experiences in developing, implementing and assessing QL programs. Pre-registration is required by Feb. 24. Contact Don Leake don.leake@uwrf.edu to register.
