Dr. Haugen Recalls Experience at UW-Eau Claire

By Brian Jansen

Susan Haugen was no stranger to UW-Eau Claire when she joined the Department of Accountancy faculty in 1985. Haugen is an alumnus of the university, having graduated in 1972 with a degree in Business Education.

While at UW-Eau Claire, she taught accounting systems and accounting principles. She has developed several MBA courses, including one on managerial fraud and two online classes on information security and computer fraud.

Haugen has dedicated herself to helping students achieve high-standards in the use of computer related technology. In 2004, she was named Computer Educator of the Year by the International Association for Computer Information Systems. Candidates for this award must show exceptional research and teaching skills, have made significant contributions to information systems education, and enjoy a national or international reputation for their outstanding work throughout the information systems community.

Haugen has held leadership positions in Midwest Business Association, University Insurance Association, and Royal Credit Union, where she currently serves on the board of directors.

When asked what her favorite memory is of the College of Business Haugen replied, "Being the advisor for Beta Alpha Psi and the Student Accounting Society for 20 years. It was fun getting to know students outside of the classroom."

Haugen and her husband, Bob Behling, plan to move to Hattiesburg, Mississippi. They hope to eventually rebuild their home in Long Beach, Mississippi which was destroyed by Hurricane Katrina.

Although Haugen is looking forward to retirement, she will miss her colleagues at UW-Eau Claire as well as her students. "I have been privileged over the years to have had many wonderful students in my classes," she said.
