HCAD practicum retreat focuses on the value of teams
Forty-four University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire health care administration (HCAD) students tackled the University ropes course and numerous other team building activities before heading off to their 50-week practicum experience. The annual HCAD retreat, which was held May 21-22, 2012, included an overnight camping trip at Beaver Creek Reserve, a nature reserve near Eau Claire, networking and team decision making activities, and discussions with UW-Eau Claire faculty and staff and practicum preceptors.
Also attending the retreat were UW-Eau Claire HCAD faculty and staff Dr. Doug Olson, Dr. Jennifer Johs-Artisensi, and LaNette Flunker; UW-Eau Claire management instructor Justin Gardner; and area senior care administrators and UW-Eau Claire HCAD alumni Randy Rennock, Syverson Lutheran Home, Karen Robinson, Chippewa Manor Nursing and Rehabilitation, and Kendall Rosemeyer, Dove Healthcare West.
Gardner led students in group activities that were designed to help make them comfortable in new situations while building their decision making and networking skills. Rennock, Robinson and Rosemeyer, who also are practicum preceptors, offered students tips for a successful practicum experience.
Financial support for the HCAD retreat was provided by the alumni and friends who support the UW-Eau Claire Center for Health Administration and Aging Services Excellence (CHAASE). Gifts made to CHAASE made through the UW-Eau Claire Foundation support special immersion experiences for students that increase their knowledge of the long term care profession through retreats, field trips to organizations and in-depth, facilitated dialogues with key leaders.
