UWEC students win scholarship awards in Target Case Competition

The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire student team consisting of Matthew Kempfert, Katherine Klundt, and Ryan Patek placed first at the 2012 annual UW-Eau Claire Target Case Competition. Each team member received a $500 scholarship.

Kempfert is a senior IS systems development major from Appleton, WI; Klundt is a senior biology major from Elm Grove, WI; and Patek is a senior business finance and economics major from Green Bay, WI.

Finishing in second place was the team consisting of Jakob Broesch, Nathan Carr, Emily Matuska, and Beatris Mendez Gandica. Each member of the second place team received a $300 scholarship.

Broesch is a senior IS business analysis major from Hales Corner, WI; Carr is a sophomore computer science major from Woodbury, MN; Matuska is junior IS business analysis and business finance double major from Wabasha, MN; and Mendez Gandica is a senior IS business analysis and international business double major from Venezuela.

Third place was awarded to team members Michael Gillard, Tommy Guarisco, and Nathan Hamann. Each team member received a $200 scholarship.

Gillard is a sophomore IS business analysis major from Hastings, MN; Guarisco is a junior IS business analysis major from Wausaukee, WI; and Hamann is a junior IS systems development major from Bloomington, MN.

Scholarships were funded by a $4,000 grant from the Target Company.

This year's case study entitled, "Technology and the Grocery Guest," required students to develop a strategy for Target that leveraged technology to enhance every aspect of the customer shopping experience. Students formally present their solutions via videoconferencing from UW-Eau Claire to judges at the Target corporate headquarters in Minneapolis, MN. Creativity, written and oral communication skills, and business strategy all played a part in the judging results.

Coordinating the case competition were Meghan McBroom, HR campus recruiter, Target; Don Gaber, IS lecturer, UW-Eau Claire Department of Information Systems, and members of the UW-Eau Claire student chapter of the Association of Information Technology Professionals (AITP). Gaber is the faculty adviser for AITP.
