Apply to go Abroad with GlobITpro!
GlobITpro is an innovative educational experience that gives students the opportunity to participate in a semester abroad to be immersed in a new culture and build skills for global IT project management. Students who are accepted into the program study at one of the partnering universities in the United States or Europe, and are awarded a $5,000 stipend which can be used for airfare, room and board, and/or travel (the program also honors in-state resident tuition and fees). Participating in this consortium program are UW-Eau Claire, the University of Nebraska-Omaha, Austria's Management Center Innsbruck and Germany's Technische Universitat Braunschweig.
"I attended global business management lectures while studying at the Management Center Innsbruck in Austria," said Jeremiah Isaccson, a Senior UW-Eau Claire Information Systems major from Mondovi, Wis., who participated in the summer, 2010 program. "From this experience, I was able to network with a team of individuals from around the world. Together, we conducted research and presented our findings to our peers."
As a result of his participation in GlobITpro, Jeremiah stated that he also gained technical expertise, cultural sensitivity, and an enlightened sense of personal awareness and professional direction.
"I gained an entirely new network of friends from around the world. The people I met through the program will forever be individuals that I admire and respect due to the priceless experiences shared and memories made," he stated.
The GlobITpro project is funded by a four-year grant from the U.S. Department of Education-Fund for the Improvement of Postsecondary Education (FIPSE).
Students in the program participate in classroom and extracurricular activities designed to help develop a global mindset that is receptive and respectful of cultural differences. Students also develop a global knowledge that includes an understanding of entrepreneurship and IT management and research, and global work skills that prepare students to work effectively across cultures.
Markus Steiner, an Austrian student from Salzburg, studied at UW-Eau Claire in the fall of 2010 through GlobeITPro. He described the program as a "high quality opportunity to study in an excellent environment."
"The classes that I took were amazing, and I also joined a student organization. There is high educational quality. The host family program was amazing, too," stated Markus. "I really discovered myself as a student."
Over the course of the entire program, 48 students from the United States and Europe, as well as 18 faculty, will participate. A total of twelve students will travel abroad each year; six students will be from the U.S. and six will be from Europe.
The program is currently seeking applicants for the Spring 2012 program. For more information about the program, or to apply, contact Dr. Matt Germonprez, Associate Professor of Information Technology at UW-Eau Claire.
