Nine Students Participate in APICS Case Competition

Nine members of the UW-Eau Claire student chapter of APICS: The Association for Operations Management participated in the 14th Annual Great Lakes District Case Competition February 20-21, 2009. The competition was held at the Double Tree Hotel, located in Oak Brook, Illinois.

Twenty-eight teams from twenty-six universities in the Great Lakes District competed. The teams were presented with an operations management problem at 10:00 pm and had until 10:30 the next morning to develop a strategy for solving the problem. A written proposal was submitted to the judges and a presentation was given to the entire group.

Students were asked to develop a strategy to help Toyota overcome a projected loss; the company’s first in seventy-two years. The UW-Eau Claire team, which placed third in the competition, succeeded in developing a lean manufacturing solution that increased demand and kept Toyota ahead of its competition with minimal costs.
