New business writing and presentations lab to open February 11

The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire Business Communication program has created a business writing and presentation lab to help students in any business course with their business writing and presentations needs. The new lab opens Monday, February 11.

“Our goal is to enhance and strengthen students' written and oral communication skills," said Emily Elsner Twesme, Business Writing and Presentations Lab coordinator. “Our student tutors are here to help students make their documents or presentations stronger, clearer, or more concise.”

The Business Writing and Presentation Lab can be found in two locations in Schneider Hall. The location, hours of operation, and type of support available in each lab are as follows:

  • Writing Lab, Schneider 322 (Center for Sales & Sales Management)
Hours: Sun & Mon: 4–6 pm; Tue & Thu: 8–11 am; Wed: 4–7 pm
Assistance is provided for all forms of written business communication, including email messages, formal letters, press releases, business reports, and employment documents such as résumés and cover letters.
  • Presentations Lab, Schneider 216
    Hours: Sun: Noon–9 pm; Mon–Wed: 5–9 pm
Assistance is provided for all forms of professional presentations. Tutors also offer suggestions to students to help them plan, facilitate, and lead small-group meetings and round-table discussions.

Appointments are available in 15-minute blocks. Students are limited to two, 15-minute tutoring sessions per week. Students who need more time can schedule back-to-back appointments on the same day or return later in the week for another appointment, according to Twesme.

Walk-in appointments are welcome, but if students want to guarantee a tutoring session, they should sign up for an appointment online beginning February 4 on the Business Communication website.

For more information, contact Emily Elsner Twesme, Business Writing and Presentations Lab coordinator, Business Communication Program.

Getting the most from your tutoring experience

A 15-minute tutoring session goes by quickly. To get the most from the session, Twesme offers the following suggestions:

  • Come with an objective. Determine what you need/want help with prior to your meeting.
  • Come prepared to work. Bring the following items with you: your assignment; grading rubric; your textbook(s); paper and pen; and the hard or electronic copy of the work you have completed on the assignment. If you don’t know where to start, jot down your ideas and bring them with you.
