AMA Attends International Conference, Chapter Receives Recognition

By President Rachel Roberts and Vice-President Jennifer Forsythe, UW-Eau Claire American Marketing Association

A group of eleven members from the UW-Eau Claire chapter of the American Marketing Association (AMA) attended the 31st Annual International Collegiate Conference held March 26–28 in New Orleans, LA. The students took part in the conference to become better prepared to launch successful marketing careers and compete against 146 universities from across North America. Students met representatives from other AMA chapters as well as recruiters in special roundtable discussions where they shared stories and tips for success. The students were also provided with networking opportunities, recruiting opportunities, and the chance to listen to top industry professionals speak throughout the conference. In addition, there were multiple sessions on how the students could improve the chapter and themselves. The conference concluded on Saturday night with a traditional business attire banquet, where awards for various competitions and the top chapters of 2008-2009 were announced.

This was the first year in over a decade that the UW-Eau Claire American Marketing Association has competed as a national chapter. The chapter received an honorable mention in the Chapter Recruitment Video Competition and was recognized as an Outstanding Chapter. The Outstanding Chapter award is only given to eight schools internationally and recognizes outstanding performance in all areas evaluated, including Professional Development, Membership Activities and Recruitment, Internal and External Communications, Community Service, Fundraising, and Organizational Strategic Planning.

Interim AMA advisor Scott Swanson said “This is a truly extraordinary win for a chapter new to the competition. UW-EC AMA far outperformed the vast majority of universities from across North America. Being new to the competition there are still areas to improve on, and additional competitions to get involved with, but our chapter is well on their way to becoming a future Chapter of the Year winner. The leadership of President Rachel Roberts and Vice-President Jennifer Forsythe in accepting the challenge of becoming a national chapter, and putting together a successful strategic plan and reporting process, was instrumental in this accomplishment. All of the UW-EC AMA members should take great pride in this award.”
