Each fall semester, over 100 employers from across the country congregate on the UW-Eau Claire campus seeking out new talent, promoting their companies and guiding students in their post-graduate plans. This gathering and interaction between businesses and students, which has occurred every year since 1957, is the UW-Eau Claire Career Conference.
Beta Upsilon Sigma (BUS), a campus business fraternity, organizes the event, assembling a committee of members who plan it. BUS members Dan Ashfeld, Kristine Betz, Lauren Buck, Laura Cavil, and David Murphy are in charge of this year’s Career Conference.
“Most events like job fairs are usually put on by student career services,” said Murphy. “Career Conference is one of the only ones run by a student organization.”
Over the summer, the five member committee has been busy creating advertisements, mapping out set-up in Zorn Arena, and contacting potential employers. However on the day of Career Conference, all BUS members will be working the event.
Career Conference boasts such big names as 3M, Cargill, Hormel, Target, and Wells Fargo. These companies learn about the event through various channels, such as employees who are also UW-Eau Claire alumni. However, as members in the group have witnessed, many companies initially contact BUS, rather than the organization contacting them. As to why many major businesses continue to attend UW-Eau Claire’s Career Conference year after year, Buck said companies constantly comment on how well UW-Eau Claire students perform as employees or interns.
“These companies really love Eau Claire students” she said.
Career Conference’s popularity is also reflected in the number of employers registered. As of September 4, there were 114 employers registered, with more on a waiting list. View a list of 2007 employers.
“It’s important to know that we fill up pretty quickly,” Betz said. “As of a week or two ago, we were filled (for this year’s conference).”
All committee members acknowledged that employers, who also attend career fairs on other university campuses, frequently comment on how well BUS runs the Eau Claire event. The opportunity to interact with great students combined with a well-run event has resulted in businesses developing a strong loyalty to the UW-Eau Claire Career Conference.
In honor of the event's 50th anniversary, the committee has created a special logo and developed special recognitions for sponsors. They are also starting a registration program to document all majors who attend the conference.
The UW-Eau Claire Career Conference takes place September 27 from 10:00 am -3:00 pm in Zorn Arena. The event is free and is open to all UW-Eau Claire students.
A Pre-Conference Reception, where students can interact with recruiters in a social setting, will be held September 26 at the Holiday Inn – Campus Area. The event, which is hosted by the Student Accounting Society, begins at 6:30 pm and is free to all UW-Eau Claire students. Hors’dourves will be served.
