After teaching accounting at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire for 29 years, Dr. Mike Wilson will retire on June 30, 2007. Since he began in 1978, Dr. Wilson has been a great asset to this university, especially to the Department of Accounting and Finance where he has served as an accounting faculty member and department chair. Through his involvement with the department and the College of Business, Wilson has had a positive impact on the educational experiences of thousands of business students.
Prior to starting his career at UW-Eau Claire, Dr. Wilson held a variety of public accounting positions in Kansas City, Missouri. He began seeking a teaching position while working on his MBA. "I heard about UW-Eau Claire when I was in Kansas City," said Wilson. "The Blugolds always came to Kansas City for the NAIA basketball tournament and always brought the most excited fans," he said. "Just hearing about the school, knowing the reputation of all the Wisconsin schools, and hearing about this particular school through the basketball team is what drew me to UW-Eau Claire."
Dr. Wilson has had an amazing career at UW-Eau Claire. "I will always remember the students and colleagues that I've worked with over the years." When asked what his favorite memory of teaching at UW-Eau Claire was, Dr. Wilson joked, "The end of each semester." He recalled the best experience of his career was working with students. "Working with a new group of students every semester and seeing [past students] be successful after they graduate-seeing that they've done well in their lives-is the most rewarding experience of my career," he said. When asked what he will miss the most about being a professor he responded, "Definitely the students. I've always tried to develop a rapport with the students; accounting is serious stuff, but I try to have fun." He also mentioned, "I will miss throwing snowballs at Roger Selin."
Following his retirement on June 30, Dr. Wilson plans to travel with his wife in their RV through the north eastern coast of Canada and the United States. When asked what aspects of retirement he is looking forward to most he responded, "Relaxing, seeing the sights, going to places we've never been before, and spending more time with the grandkids."
Dr. Wilson greatly impacted students and staff with his knowledge and enthusiasm. His leadership, loyalty to UW-Eau Claire, and vigor will be greatly missed.
