A team of four students from the UW-Eau Claire chapter of Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) took first place in the Duel in Dairyland, a personal financial case study competition for Wisconsin and Illinois SIFE chapters. The event was held November 3-5, 2005 in Madison, WI.
The UW-Eau Claire team won $2,500 and the opportunity to compete in the national Duel in the Desert case competition, which will be held March 2-5, 2006 at the University of Arizona in Tucson.
Members of the UW-Eau Claire team are Jana Anderson (entrepreneur major from Northfield, MN), Theodore Howard (art major from Madison, WI), James Mueller (finance major from Sun Prairie, WI), and Jason Reger (marketing major from Apple Valley, MN). Dr. Larry Honl, Business Communication, is the faculty advisor for the group
“Our team's use of cold calling business professionals to get expert information was key to setting us apart from the other teams,” said Jana Anderson, UW-Eau Claire SIFE team member. Anderson is also the student president of the UW-Eau Claire chapter.
The Duel in Dairyland competition was one of 12 regional competitions held across the nation leading up to the national competition in Tucson. The competitions are sponsored by Take Charge America in Phoenix, Arizona, and organized and supervised by the Credit-Wise Cats, part of the Take Charge America Institute, and Students in Free Enterprise at the University of Arizona.
The Duel in the Desert competition is a national intercollegiate personal financial case study. College students from around the country are given a hypothetical case about a family in distress. In 36 hours, students are required to research the situation and design workable, ethical and creative solution to the family’s problems. They present their results to a panel of expert judges who determine the winners. Winning teams receive a trophy and cash prizes.
