How long have you been a long term care administrator? 11 years
How long have you been with your current organization? 3.5 years
How many administrative practicum students have you mentored previously?
5 students during the past 7 years
What is your approach to working with students?
- Promoting Independence
- Hands on learning
- Accessibility and availability to learning and growth opportunities specific to the individual's interests
- Focus on engagement
- Holistic approach and view to the health care spectrum
- Difficult and challenging tasks for growth
How often do you interact with students, in what way?
- I interact with students as often or as infrequent as they desire. I will fully support a mentor/mentee relationship and expect the student to engage fully in the process.
- Students have complete access to my email, calendar, and schedule throughout the entirety of their practicum. This allows the student to partake in as many or as few meetings as they desire. In time, they are able to create their own schedule and still participate in meetings and discussions which interest them.
- As we reach the middle of the practicum I tend to interact on a less regular basis with the student. It is my expectation that they have begun shaping their own practicum to meet their interest. They have fully acclimated themselves with all staff members and are capable of promoting their own independence. Commonly, they will require less guidance and direction as they are more confident in themselves and recognize I will support their endeavors.
What is your philosophy on mentoring/supervision?
- Engagement in the practicum and all learning experience are vital to the success of this program, the student's development, and the success of a mentor/mentee relationship. As the preceptor, I will invest the growth and development of each student consistent with the effort they put into their own growth and development by engaging in the process. If a student disengages, it is much more difficult to support.
How do you encourage student's growth?
- Regular communication and evaluation of strengths and weaknesses
- Promote activities and opportunites which will challenge the individual
- Encourage participation in every aspect of nursing home care
- Have honest and frank discussions about the future coupled with the leniency to allow a student to change the course of their career plans
What else should practicum students expect from you or from their overall experience at your facility?
- A broad, all-encompassing health care experience with a diverse staff
- A committed and motivated group of managers willing to teach, train and develop students
- Opportunities to witness immense organization growth and change
