Why you became a preceptor?
As a previous graduate of the UWEC Health Care Administration program, I feel that it is valuable to give back to the industry and the university. I enjoy work with the students and believe that it should be a valuable experience for both of us. WIN-WIN. Students learn from my knowledge base and experience as well as I learn from them newer innovations and ideas.
What is your approach to working with students?
I personally interact with students virtually every work day that I/ we are in the office together. Students are provided with their own office next to my office. I maintain an open door policy and students are comfortable coming in with questions at virtually any and all times.
What is your philosophy on mentoring/supervision?
My philosophy is that you learn by doing. I provide students with a very intensive hands-on practicum experience. I oversee the students and provide input and constructive suggestions to them.
Students are involved in virtually all activities that I am involved with including but not limited to budgeting, providing presentations, board meetings, contract negotiations, etc. Additionally, I emphasize to students that they should continue to keep on learning throughout life.
How do you encourage the student's growth?
I encourage student's growth through hands on experiences including leading our continuous quality improvement program, leadership activities, as well as problem-solving activities, and dealing with personnel/residents in various realms. However, it is up to the student and their amount of motiviation and drive that ultimately determine how beneficial the practicum experience at Grand View will be for them.
What else should practicum students expect from you or from their overall experience at your facility?
Students will be VERY INVOLVED at Grand View Care Center. Near the middle of their practicum at Grand View Care Center, projects and experiences they are involved with are similar to that of an Assistant Administrator. Past students have proven to be very marketable and read to hit the ground running upon completion of their practicum experience.
