Why you became a preceptor?
I am a grateful to the UWEC program as a graduate, I love my job and I enjoy watching people grow and find their passions.
What is your approach to working with students?
I am very hands on and I give the student a full back stage pass to the operation of my facility. I try to have a sense of humor, enjoying what I am doing, while remaining professional and being a leader and setting the tone for the organization.
How often do you interact with students, in what way?
I have the students share a space in the administrative offices and they are in the middle of everything that goes on every day.
What is your philosophy on mentoring/supervision?
I believe in involving them in as much as possible. I believe that each student is responsible for their own experience, however it is my role to sometimes help them define their role, but more importantly start to understand the type of leader they want to become and help them to work towards developing those leadership skills. While also teaching them the level of ownership it takes to be a successful leader.
How do you encourage the student's growth?
I encourage through leading by example, asking questions and getting the students to want to take risks.
