How long have you been a long term care administrator? 4.5 years
How long have you been with your current organization? 5.5 years
How many administrative practicum students have you mentored previously?
Periodically, several from other facilities. First full time student will be Fall 2011
Why you became a preceptor?
I am a big supporter of the program, personally having gone through it. I believe so many valuable, hands-on things are learned throughout the 12 monthes of the practicum experience- much more than is learned in the classroom during undergrad studies. I enjoy what I do and feel I have advanced quickly as a new grad and what to share about my experience and knowledge with others entering the field. I believe this industry has come a long way, but can go so much further.
How often do you interact with students, in what way?
Daily 1:1 interaction at first and as they feel more familiar with the facility and other department members I like to see the to be more independent and go out and ask to be a part of things they want to learn more about. I allow them to first observe, I provide explaination usually verbal and written and then want them to be as involved as possible. I would expect that they would want to try things on their own and ask for help when they get stuck or have questions. Trying things on your own is an important step of learning and gaining confidence.
What is your philosophy on mentoring/supervision?
Manage by exception. I do not feel I micro-manage and aim to give my direct reports space to do their jobs and make their own decisions. In returen, I expect that they communicate important items to me and keep me informed should I need to jump in and assist or explain something to my superiors when asked. It is important to me that my direct reports feel supported and know that they can bring their concerns to me. I want them to feel that I advocate for what is best for the facility/customers that we serve and that I appreciate their ideas and feedback.
How do you encourage the student's growth?
By pushing them beyond their comfort zone. This may start with leading a committee and eventually lead to running more meetings from time to time. If their goal is to be an administrator they need to be comfortable with being in charge and calling the shots. They will be the one everyone looks to for answers and need to listen to other's concerns and provide suggestions on how to make improvements and resolve conflict. Ultimately the Administrator's actions set the tone for the facility. They need to set a good example and always remain calm and positive.
What else should practicum students expect from you or from their overall experience at your facility?
I am very open and will share with them as much as I can. It is important that they understand why we do things and understand what drives the decisions we have to make so they are able to weigh the pro's and con's. I tend to be more hands on than others, so I have the ability to truly understand what is causing certain difficulties the facility is experiencing to make the best decision/change in how we do things. By the end of the year, I want them to have the ability and confidence to operate their own facility, yet recognize areas they still need to grow in.
