Spring Into Excellence: A New Season For Healthcare

Spring Into Excellence: A New Season For Healthcare

This year’s annual Health Care Administration/CHAASE Spring Banquet, “Spring Into Excellence: A New Season For Healthcare” is scheduled for Thursday, April 8 at the Plaza Hotel & Suites in Eau Claire. Neil Kurtz, M.D., President and CEO of Golden Living, will present the keynote address.

In addition to Dr. Kurtz’s keynote presentation, the sixth annual Practicum Open House will begin at 5 pm at the Plaza Hotel. Similar to a job or internship fair, the Practicum Open House gives exposure to the practicum sites and organizations that will be available to students as they enter the practicum and venture into the workplace. Following the open house is a social hour at 6 pm, and the banquet will begin at 7 pm.

RSVP to Meredith Wolf at wolfm@uwec.edu or 715.836.3543 by April 1. Be sure to specify if you will be attending the practicum open house.

Health Care Administration Alumni Survey Report

We are pleased to report the results from the UW-Eau Claire health care administration alumni survey that was conducted in January 2010. We received 105 responses from alumni who have graduated from the program over the last thirty years. Graduates reported satisfaction with the health care administration program and positive experiences with their education while at UW-Eau Claire.

Alumni reported the following percentages:

• Overall satisfaction with curriculum – 93%
• Satisfaction with practicum experience – 93%
• Faculty knowledge and expertise – 93%
• Faculty encouragement and support – 85%
• Flexibility of program requirements – 78%
• Program value for your career – 90%

Alumni were also asked to describe their overall experience with the health care administration program at UW-Eau Claire. Over 93% reported it was good to excellent (see Figure below).

HCAD Alumni Survey

Additionally, we asked questions about where are graduates are working today—the results were interesting!

• 21% of our alumni went on for a graduate education.
• 56% stayed in Wisconsin and 23% moved to Minnesota. The initial sample had alumni located in 15 other states.
• Based on these responses, over 50% of are graduates are working in senior care. A wide variety of other health care services were also represented as primary vocational settings. We found that only 5% of our graduates are not working in health care.

We asked one more question about the perceived quality of our program as a working professional. We were extremely pleased with the results, as 95% reported it was good to excellent (see figure below).

HCAD Alumni Survey

Last, we were interested in finding how are graduates are making a difference in their work, and to find out about their engagement and contributions to the field of health and aging services.

The results are shared in rank order by percentage below:

• Volunteer at least once a month – 54%
• Charitable contributions over $500 a year – 53%
• Served in a leadership position for a professional association – 40%
• Have served as a professional mentor – 38%
• Served on a non-profit board – 37%
• Have received state professional recognition – 27%
• Have received national professional recognition – 17%
• Started a company – 8%
• Own a company – 8%
• Served in an elected office – 6%

Overall, we are very pleased with the impact of our graduates and the contributions they are making to their communities and the health and aging services field.

We are proud to share these positive results of the survey. The full report and responses to the survey questions are being used by faculty to further advance the health care administration program and the Center for Health Administration and Aging Services Excellence. We appreciate the time that alumni took to participate in the survey!
