I moved to the U.S. nine years ago with the dream of attending college. I had 600 dollars in my pocket and no place to call home. It took me a little under five years to save enough money to attend a college. My experience was unlike most of the incoming freshman. I realize that many students pay for their own college educations, but many have their families standing behind them. They still have a home to go to when they need do their laundry, a mom sending them chocolate chip cookies and toilet paper, a dad who would help move the “big stuff” when moving from the dorms to their first apartment, a 20 dollar bill here and there when they are running low on gas, and a place to spend the holidays. I was truly on my own. My parents couldn’t tour college campuses with me, they couldn’t help me pay my rent when I fell behind, and they didn’t live close enough for me to come home on the holidays; they were a half a world away.
For me, picking a college was an incredibly important task. I wanted to attend a college that was not only strong in academics, but had also created a strong sense of community. A college where the faculty and students were open-minded, helpful, and dedicated to help me pursue my dreams. It was through reading good reviews in various magazines, touring the campus, and word of mouth that I heard about UW-Eau Claire, their College of Business, and their exemplary reputation.
