Workshop Timeline

• Career Planning (Becoming a Business Professional) Workshop to be completed FRESHMAN year.

• Professional Appearance Workshop to be completed FRESHMAN year.

• The Job Campaign (Developing your Professional Profile) Workshop to be completed SOPHOMORE year prior to applying for an internship.

• Professional Etiquette Workshop to be completed JUNIOR year prior to applying for an internship.

Suggested Attire

Students are strongly encouraged to present themselves in a professional manner at each workshop. Business casual attire is recommended. (No jeans, t-shirts, sweatshirts, sweatpants, etc.) Business casual may include a polo and khakis for men and khakis or dress pants and a nice button up shirt or blouse for women. Workshops involve professionals from the community. Every contact you make should form a positive and professional impression.

Student Professional Development

The Student Professional Development Program is a series of non-credit workshops designed to give business students the skills they need to present themselves in a professional manner throughout their career.

The Student Professional Development Program consists of four workshops: Career Planning (Becoming a Business Professional), Professional Appearance, The Job Campaign (Developing your Professional Profile), and Professional Etiquette. The workshops are a graduation requirement for all College of Business majors. Students are encouraged to take all four prior to applying for an internship.


Career Planning (Becoming a Business Professional)

To be completed FRESHMAN year. Prerequisite for The Job Campaign (Developing Your Professional Profile).

  • Assessing your skills and interests
  • Exploring careers & majors (Introduction to 13 majors, 7 minors, & 5 certificates within the COB)
  • Identifying, prioritizing, and setting academic & career goals

A panel of professionals will share advice and answer questions about their “real world” experiences. A panel of College of Business interns will share their personal experiences with finding and completing an internship in their field of study.

Students must purchase Blugold CareerLink through Career Services prior to attending.

Professional Appearance

To be completed FRESHMAN year.

  • Dressing for an interview and on the job
  • Differentiating between business casual and business professional attire
  • Accessorizing, grooming, and general appearance guidelines for projecting a professional image
  • Networking and body language, what you are really saying (perception)

Student should bring a tie to the workshop, a demonstration on how to tie a tie will be included.

The Job Campaign (Developing your Professional Profile)

To be completed SOPHOMORE year, prior to applying for an internship. Prior completion of Career Planning (Becoming a Business Professional) is required.

  • Developing your career objective
  • Finding job openings and companies of interest
  • Researching employers
  • Preparing documents: resume, cover letters, portfolios
  • Interviewing tips and preparation
  • Negotiating, accepting and declining job offers

Human resource professionals will discuss current application and interview expectations and trends.

Workshop fee: $25.00

Professional Etiquette

To be completed SOPHOMORE year, prior to applying for an internship. Completion of BCOM 405, may be substituted for this workshop (must contact program administrator).

  • Preparing for an event
  • Making the right first impression
  • Initiating conversations, making introductions, when and where to sit
  • Dining styles, the place setting, serving order, toasting, tipping
  • Ending the meal and following up

Includes a 5-course meal

Workshop Fee: $38.75 ($18.75 workshop fee + $20.00 banquet fee)
