Country gal's journey to journalism
By Monzong Cha
You might assume Gina Duwe would major in agriculture business and continue her parents’ small business of selling natural grown herbs when you know that she was born and raised on a Ginseng farm. Yet even though Duwe came to the cities from a rural area, she majored as a journalist, which requires a fast-paced life style. Duwe remembers her parents always pushing her towards being a hardworking person as she grew up around them while they took care of a Ginseng business. When Duwe made her decision of majoring in journalism her parents were behind her a hundred percent of the way. “Yeah, they were very supportive of my decision going into journalism as long as it was something I love to do then they were very supportive of it,” she said. Duwe, 23, a current reporter at the Janesville Gazette covers five small communities west of Janesville. She also updates the company’s news Web site and printing her stories onto newspapers is her specialty. After enrolling in a few journalism classes during high school, Duwe’s interest in journalism had sky-rocketed. Fortunately, there was a school newspaper in her high school where she would practice her skills. Every month she would cover various topics about her school such as the popular teachers whom were soon to retire or about the work constructions going on in school. Throughout her high school years, she was involved with many volunteer type organizations and sports. In college, she enjoyed participating in study abroad where she went to study in England with a group of students. Someday, Duwe would like to return to the rural area with a family of her own.
