Nearly 500 communication and journalism majors and minors are enrolled in one of the five emphases offered by the department: organizational communication, communication studies, public relations, advertising, and journalism.

The Department of Communication and Journalism faculty are committed to a philosophy emphasizing the development, integration, and practical application of theories, knowledge, and skills related to communication and journalism. Communication and journalism are crucial to a democratic society.

For the 21st consecutive year, U.S. News & World Report magazine has named the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire among the best public regional  universities in the Midwest.

Blugold Media is home to University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire student media and supported by the Department of Communication and Journalism.

Student journalists produce radio programming weekly in collaboration with Wisconsin Public Radio for Blugold Radio, found online and heard on the dial at FM 88.3.

They also cover the campus for the nearly 100-year-old student newspaper, The SpectatorThe Spectator is published online. A print edition is published biweekly.

Both Blugold Radio and The Spectator are independent student organizations, funded in part by student fees.

Journalism students enrolled in the capstone course, Digital Newsroom, and other journalism courses produce Inside Eau Claire which covers the local community and surrounding areas. A journalism faculty member serves as publisher, but students are responsible for every aspect of the news site from generating story ideas to creating and producing all content.
