Listen to an audio version of this story.

            Photojournalism is Leah Jones’ passion.

"The freedom to travel to new places and to meet new people is exciting and thrilling," she said.

Leah Jones, 28, was born in Beloit, Wisconsin. She is at University of Wisconsin, Eau Claire helping to mentor high school journalists of color.

While attending Grand Valley State University, Jones majored in photography, with a minor in advertising public relations.

What made her interested in journalism? She actually wasn’t interested in journalism, as in the printed word, but photography. She found that photojournalism could pay the bills, rather than just photography alone.

“It’s the best job I’ve ever had; ever,” she said.

Jones has three sisters and one brother. She was the second born.

All the new computer technology makes her job more complex. Not only does she produce pictures but must complement the photo with audio and video.

Ten years from now, Jones imagines herself becoming an editor of a medium size newspaper or as a self-employed wedding photographer.

Her parents and grandparents provide Jones her inspiration. They always advised her to apply herself at everything she does.

Outside of photograph Jones loves to travel on trains, which provides her with relaxation and a clear mind.
