Teaching Abroad

Opportunities for UW-Eau Claire Faculty
Teaching/Research Abroad in 2013-2014

UW-Eau Claire faculty members interested in teaching abroad have two options: 1) propose a short-term, faculty-led program or 2) apply to teach on an existing program.

Propose a Short-Term Faculty-Led Program
Short-term, faculty-led applications are due March 1, 2012.
The Center for International Education (CIE) is looking to expand our short-term study abroad program opportunities. We are inviting UW-Eau Claire faculty members to propose new short-term study abroad programs for the Summer 2013 and Winterim 2014 sessions. Faculty should review the Guidelines for Short-Term Study Abroad Programs and Proposals. Faculty members with questions should consult Leslie Callihan, Study Abroad Coordinator for Faculty-Led Programs.

Apply to Teach on an Existing Program
Teach abroad applications are due April 19, 2012 with the exception of Harlaxton, which is due March 15, 2012.
For academic year 2013-2014, the CIE offers the following programs.

Harlaxton College-Grantham England – Fall 2013 or Spring 2014
University of Evansville faculty receive priority placement and have chosen the following disciplines for 2013-2014.

Fall 2013: Economics, Engineering, Nursing
Spring 2014: Philosophy, Psychology, Theatre.

UW-Eau Claire faculty in those disciplines cannot be considered for those semesters.  Harlaxton is seeking a blend of lower-level general education courses and mid-level and upper-level courses that "majors" would be likely to take.  They offer a few special topics courses each term, especially if they take into account the British context of the Harlaxton experience.

Kansai Gaidai University-Osaka, Japan – Fall 2013 or Spring 2014
Kansai Gaidai University seeks faculty to teach courses in their Asian Studies Programs.

Jinan University-Guangzhou, China – Summer 2013
If you are interested in teaching at Jinan, please contact the Karl Markgraf to discuss appropriate course offerings.

University of Stirling, Scotland Summer 2013
UW-Eau Claire faculty members have the option to teach a three-credit course to UW-Eau Claire students participating in the Stirling International Summer School (ISS).  The ISS is broken into two, four-week terms.  Students take nine credits over the course of the two terms. Of the nine credits, students would take six credits from Stirling faculty and three credits from the visiting UW-Eau Claire faculty member.  UWEC faculty have the option of teaching during the first four-week block (mid-June to mid-July) or the second four-week block (mid-July to mid-August).  The proposed courses should be appealing to students from a wide variety of disciplines and fulfill at least one general education requirement. Faculty must meet a minimum enrollment based on their rank. Please contact the Colleen Marchwick in the CIE for an exact number. Housing for the faculty member will be provided by the University of Stirling provided that recruitment goals are met.  Housing for accompanying family can be arranged at the faculty member’s expense.  Faculty should be aware that the first UWEC faculty member taught on this option in summer 2011.   As it is a new option, faculty interested in this option should be flexible as the program option may change as we learn from the summer 2011 and upcoming 2012 experience.

Applications for teach abroad opportunities may be downloaded from our website

If you are interested in any of the above opportunities, please contact the Center for International Education at 836-4411 (Schofield 3) for more information.
