Spend fall or spring semester in Spain! The Valladolid program immerses you in intensive Spanish language and literature. Courses are small and taught at various levels depending on your proficiency. You will take classes at the University, which are designed for UW-Eau Claire Spanish language students. You will not have any classes with Spaniards. Excursions to several near-by cities are included in the program cost.
Valladolid (pop. 350,000) is located 120 miles north of Madrid in Castilla and León. Many historic events have taken place in the city: the proclamation of Fernando III 'El Santo' as King of Castile, the wedding of Isabel de Castilla and Fernando de Aragón, Christopher Columbus's death, and Felipe II's birth.
Today, Valladolid is an agricultural and industrial center with an active cultural life. The Pisuerga River passes through the city, providing opportunities for fishing, boating and swimming. Valladolid houses the National Museum of Sculpture, famous Holy Week processions, museums of Cervantes and Zorrilla, and diverse architecture. Since the city is off the beaten tourist track, it is an ideal location for practicing your Spanish!
HOUSING & MEALS
You will live with a host family, usually with another U.S. student. This is a great opportunity to learn about family life in Spain as well as practice your Spanish! Past students say that living with a family is one of the most valuable parts of their study abroad experience. You will learn as much at the dinner table as you do in the classroom. You will receive three meals a day from your host family.

The Centro de Idiomas sets up language exchanges and other cultural events for students to get more involved. Consider volunteering to teach English, or being part of the Spanish language intercambios, where you will have the opportunity to practice your Spanish and help a Spanish student practice their English!
Spain is an amazing country and as for Valladolid, I think it's the best city to study abroad in. Everyone speaks Spanish and is encouraging when you try, because they really want to help. It's as if they are proud that more people want to learn of their lifestyle. The learning experience is never ending and fully worth it. One of the best things I have done in my life is study abroad in Spain. -Nicole
Excursions to cities such as Segovia, Avila, El Escorial, and Madrid are included in the program cost.
