Program Description:
Valladolid, Spain

Spend fall or spring semester, or the full academic year, in Spain!  The Valladolid program offers a semester of intensive study of Spanish language, culture and literature in either fall or spring. You will take classes for international students at the University of Valladolid. Courses are small and taught at various levels depending on your proficiency. Excursions to several near-by cities are included in the program cost.

New beginning in 2016-2017!  Stay for the full academic year!  Academic year students participate in the fall intensive language and culture program, then spend the spring as an exchange student, taking regular university classes at UVA. You also have the option to complete your service-learning between semesters!

Valladolid (pop. 350,000) is located 120 miles north of Madrid in Castilla and León. Many historic events have taken place in the city: the proclamation of Fernando III 'El Santo' as King of Castile, the wedding of Isabel de Castilla and Fernando de Aragón, Christopher Columbus's death, and Felipe II's birth.

Today, Valladolid is an agricultural and industrial center with an active cultural life. The Pisuerga River passes through the city, providing opportunities for fishing, boating and swimming. Valladolid houses the National Museum of Sculpture, famous Holy Week processions, museums of Cervantes and Zorrilla, and diverse architecture. Since the city is off the beaten tourist track, it is an ideal location for practicing your Spanish!

Semester students will live with a host family, usually with another U.S. student. This is a great opportunity to learn about family life in Spain as well as practice your Spanish! Past students say that living with a family is one of the most valuable parts of their study abroad experience. You will learn as much at the dinner table as you do in the classroom. You will receive three meals a day from your host family.

Academic year students will live with a host family in the fall, then move into shared apartments with other students in the spring.  You will then cook your own meals or eat in university cafeterias or restaurants.

Designed for Spanish majors and minors, on the semester program, you will earn 12-16 credits in Spanish language, literature, and civilization. If you stay for the full year, you will choose classes from the regular UVA course offerings during spring semester.  To learn about eligibility requirements, academic offerings, and the academic calendar click here:  Academics - Valladolid

I came back to the United States with a greater appreciation of the Spanish culture, enhanced Spanish language skills, lifelong friends from other countries, thousands of pictures, unforgettable experiences from travels across Europe, a better understanding of my strengths and weaknesses, and a greater idea of the role I play in our world. –Amanda, Spring 2013

My time abroad was enriching in my personal life and my academic studies.  Learned a lot both in and outside of classes. Most importantly, I learned all about a brand new culture and life style different from my own which has allowed me to see the world in a new light. – Nik, Spring 2013

Studying abroad is definitely a growing experience, and I’m sure I will contribute to learn from it even after I return. –Makenzie, Spring 2013

Excursions to cities such as Segovia, Avila, El Escorial, and Madrid are included in the program cost. In addition, Valladolid is an ideal starting point for exploring Spain, Portugal and North Africa, as well as other parts of Europe. France, Austria, Italy, Switzerland, or Germany are all within a day's travel time.
