Program Description:

THE PROGRAM
Charming colonial towns, beautiful beaches, hot springs, and cattle towns on the Argentine border are just a few of the things Uruguay has to offer. Its year-round mild climate, safe cities, good quality of life, and long-standing tradition of democracy make it an excellent site to experience the rich diversity and history of South America.

THE LOCATION
Montevideo (population 1.5 million) is the capital of Uruguay. A port city, Montevideo combines a picturesque blend of colonial Spanish, Italian and Art Deco styles, and is surrounded by white sandy beaches. It is also the center of MERCOSUR, South America's free trade zone.

During your stay in Uruguay you will be studying at the Universidad Católica del Uruguay, which was founded in 1954. It enrolls 4,500 students in a wide range of subjects, including business, communications, education and sociology. The campus is located about a 15-minute bus ride from downtown Montevideo.

Uruguayan Host Family

HOUSING & MEALS
During the program you will be living with a host family, which offers an excellent opportunity for you to learn about family life in Uruguay, meet locals, and practice your Spanish on a daily basis!

Accommodations are arranged with carefully selected host families. In general only one student is placed per family; in all cases, you will have your own room. Your host family will provide you three meals a day.

Past participants report that the informal learning with their family was as important as their classwork to their academic experience. In the words of a past student, "I was so glad to live with a host family rather than in a hotel or dorm. It was a great cultural experience."

STUDENT LIFE
Students in Uruguay often meet friends through getting involved on campus and with their host families. An exciting opportunity to get involved is the Servicios Comunitarios course, were you volunteer in the community. While doing so you are able to practice your Spanish and help others while doing it! There are not any university sports/intramural, but they do have short, eight week after-school courses such as samba and photography.

STUDENT EXPERIENCE
"My life in Uruguay was truly remarkable. There were ups and downs and lefts and rights, each day was exciting and boredom was not in my vocabulary. I got lost a few times but found my way back, I lost a few things but found tons of new friends and learned so much about...well, life! My views on the world have changed and I am very glad that I took the opportunity to study abroad, I absolutely loved every minute of my time in Uruguay."

IS ISEP FOR ME?
The best way to think of an ISEP-Direct experience is to imagine that you are going to study at a university abroad, just as international students come to study in the U.S. If you are independent, flexible, and adventurous, ISEP-Direct programs are a good choice for you. Here's why:

Flexibility
Communication with your host university may take longer. You will need to be flexible and willing to live with a fair amount of ambiguity as your prepare to go abroad. For example, you will most likely not know exactly how your classes from your ISEP host university will transfer to UW-Eau Claire until after you actually register for classes.

Independence
You may be the only UW-Eau Claire student going to a particular ISEP-Direct site. However, you may also be one of a large number of international students at your site, and you may need to ask many questions to find your way around at first.
