Valladolid, Spain Academics

ELIGIBILITY
To apply, you must be a currently-enrolled, degree-seeking undergraduate UW-Eau Claire student.   You must be in good academic standing and have a cumulative GPA of 2.8. You must maintain enrollment and continue to meet the academic standing and GPA requirements the semester prior to departure.  You may apply as a freshmen but need to have at least sophomore standing and have completed 5 semesters of university-level Spanish (through Spanish 301) prior to participation.

COURSES/ COURSE EQUIVALENCIES
Students participating for one semester:  During the fall or spring semester, you will take courses in Spanish language, literature, and civilization after being placed in one of three language levels. Classes meet Monday through Friday.

The pre-requisite to participate in the Valladolid program is SPAN 301. You may take SPAN 302 at UW-Eau Claire or during the semester when you are in Valladolid*.

In the fall semester, you will earn 12 credits::

Either*:
3 credits for SPAN 302 OR
3 credits for SPAN 410

And:
3 credits for SPAN 405
3 credits for SPAN 363
3 credits for SPAN 356

In the spring semester, you will earn 16 credits:

Either*:
3 credits for SPAN 302 OR
3 credits for SPAN 410

And:
3 credits for SPAN 405
3 credits for SPAN 363
3 credits for SPAN 356
2 credits for SPAN 395
2 credits of Upper Division Spanish elective

*If you take SPAN 302 prior to your semester in Valladolid, you will get credit for SPAN 410 while abroad.

Students participating for the full academic year:  During spring semester, you will take 24-30 ECTS credits (12-15 UWEC credits).  You will take regular University of Valladolid classes and may enroll in any classes for which you have the necessary pre-requisites.  UVA is a comprehensive university offering undergraduate degrees in a wide range of disciplines.  You can find course descriptions in Spanish here. FOREIGN CULTURE
This program fulfills the complete Foreign Culture requirement upon successful completion.  Please email Degree Review at regrec53@uwec.edu after completion of the program to update your degree audit. (Students earning a B.A., B.F.A. or B.M degree in the College of Arts & Sciences cannot use study abroad to fulfill their foreign language/foreign culture requirement. See the university catalog for details.)


LANGUAGE IMMERSION
All Spanish majors and minors in any of the emphases offered must complete an appropriate period of language immersion in residence in a country where the language is spoken.  This program meets the language immersion requirement for Spanish majors and minors.

ACADEMIC CALENDAR
*Fall semester runs from late September/beginning of October to the middle of December. There are no breaks during the 11-week semester.  
*Spring semester program runs from early January to mid May, with a two-week spring break. 
*The academic year program runs from late September/ beginning of October to mid-December.  Service-learning will take place in January.  Spring semester runs on the regular university calendar, from February -June.  Exam retakes are available in July.
Exact program dates are determined the semester prior to departure.
