The program is open to all academically eligible undergraduate UW-Eau Claire students. You must be in good academic standing and have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.3. You may apply as a freshman.
Academic credits are not tied to this experience. However, students can receive 3 credits of Foreign Culture. (Note that students pursuing a B.A., B.F.A., or B.M. degree in the College of Arts & Sciences MUST take the equivalent of two semesters of a foreign language to fulfill the FL/FC requirement. See the university catalogue for details.)
Completion of this program can fulfill your service-learning requirement. You must have this approved with the service learning office prior to the trip.
The program will take place over Winterim 2017, during the first two weeks of January. These are still tentative dates, DO NOT book international flights until after orientation in October.
Arrive in Guatemala City and travel to Antigua for work with local farmers, hiking Volcano Pacaya and participation in artisan workshops.
Travel to San Lucas Toliman Mission for service learning projects, Lake Atitlan boat ride, and visit to women's textile collective.
Travel Santa Anita to stay with homestay families and live and work with community leaders
Return to Antigua for visit to Project Safe Passage.
