The Program

The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire has been sending students to Murdoch University since 2004. Join the wave of students headed to Western Australia!

As a UW-Eau Claire student at Murdoch, you will be immersed in the life of an Australian university student. You can choose from all courses offered on campus that semester. You will take classes from Australian professors, with Australian classmates. When you have finished your semester, you will be able to say that you truly experienced life in another culture.

You can choose to join the Murdoch Guild of Students. There are over 50 clubs and societies (sporting, cultural, and intellectual) in the Guild. Past students have participated in African Drumming, Belly Dancing and the Gamelan Orchestra.

Housing will be arranged with the help of Murdoch University. First and second year students are typically placed on-campus, in eight bedroom apartments units in the Student Village. Third and fourth year students are generally given a choice of off-campus housing. A strong effort is made to house international and Australian students together.

Location

Perth, the capital of Western Australia, has a population of 1.38 million people and more hours of sunshine than any other Australian city and 50 kilometers of beaches. The life-style encourages both study and social activity.

Murdoch University is located 25 minutes by bus from the center of Perth, and 10 minutes from the port city of Fremantle. With a student population of 12,000, students experience a campus similar in size to Eau Claire and a community which provides individualized attention, close staff/student collaboration, and good access to support facilities such as computer labs, and the library.

Courses

UW-Eau Claire students may take classes in any of the following schools: Science/Engineering, Business/Information Technology/Law, or Social Sciences/Humanities/Education.

Course information is available on-line at http://handbook.murdoch.edu.au/units/, and a listing of many UW-Eau Claire course equivalencies is available in the Center for International Education, Schofield Hall 111. You may take 3 or 4 classes at Murdoch.

Each semester Murdoch University offers a Northwest Outback Excursion. This optional 10-day camping expedition takes you to the dolphins at Monkey Mai in the Shark Bay World Heritage Area, Ningaloo Reef, home to some 500 species of fish, and the spectacular gorges of Karijini National Park.

An on-campus travel agent can help you plan your individual adventures. From going "Down South" to the surfing beaches, "Up North" to the Outback, or flying to Sydney, there are opportunities for all budgets!

Academic Calendar

You may study at Murdoch for either semester or the full Australian academic year. The first semester (our spring) starts in late February and ends in June. The second semester (our fall) begins in mid July and ends in mid November. Summer vacation takes place December-February. Exact dates will be available the semester prior to departure.

Expenses

The estimated Wisconsin resident fee for Fall 2009 is $8,757; for Spring 2010 it is $9,370. This includes tuition, CISI and Australian government insurance and UW-Eau Claire administrative fees. Minnesota residents may apply for reciprocity; non-residents add $900.

Additional costs: passport, visa, housing, food, books, personal expenses, local transportation, and airfare. Estimate another $7,000-$7,600 for these items.

Total Wisconsin resident cost estimate: $15,757-$16,357 for fall; $16,370-$16,970 for spring. All costs are estimated and may change at any time.

Financial Aid/Scholarships

If you qualify for financial aid, you can apply your aid to program costs. Your financial aid package will be based on actual costs in Australia, including the cost of round-trip airfare. You can learn about additional options, including a study abroad grant through the UW-Eau Claire Foundation; a Wisconsin Grant for Study Abroad and scholarships for specific majors and national study abroad scholarships at http://uwec.edu/CIE/sac/finaid.htm.
