The Program

If you are looking for a study abroad experience that truly immerses you in the life of a British university student, this is the program for you!

As a UW-Eau Claire student at Lancaster University, you will take classes from British professors, with British classmates. You will live in on-campus housing with British roommates. When you have finished your semester, you will be able to say that you truly experienced life in another culture.

Location

Lancaster (pop.50,000) lies on the west coast of England. The city has a rich cultural history, dating back to Roman occupation in the first century. There is a striking mix of old and new architectural styles throughout the city, framed by the mountains of the Lake District to the north.

Lancaster University is on the southern edge of Lancaster. A short walk leads to open countryside, and charming villages are easily reached by bicycle.

Lancaster is a great starting spot for exploring the United Kingdom. On the west coast of England, it is an hour away from the beautiful Lake District. Wales is just to the south; Scotland just to the north. From nearby Liverpool, you can catch a ferry to Ireland. London is about three hours away by high-speed train, and Edinburgh is also within easy reach for a weekend visit.

Courses

You may select from a broad range of business, natural science, social science and humanities classes at Lancaster. The most current information is on the web at www.lancs.ac.uk .  Information on how credits transfer back to UW-Eau Claire is available in the Center for International Education. If you attend Lancaster for fall term only, you will earn twelve credits.  During spring semester, which consists of two terms, you may earn up to twenty credits.

Accommodations

You will live with a mix of British and international students in university residence halls.  Most rooms are singles, grouped around a communal lounge and kitchen area.

Academic Calendar

You may attend Lancaster for fall term (late September to mid-December), spring semester (early January to late June), or the full academic year. Spring semester includes a four-week break from late March to late April. Exact dates will be available the semester before you depart.

Expenses

The estimated Fall 2008 Wisconsin resident fee is $7,930; the estimated spring 2009 (two terms and up to 20 credits) Wisconsin resident charge is $10,235. Full year students receive a slight discount; estimate is $15,678. These charges includes full-time Lancaster non-resident tuition, CISI insurance, and administrative fees.   Minnesota residents may apply for reciprocity, while non-residents add $900.

Additional costs: passport,  housing, food, books, personal expenses, local transportation, and airfare. Estimate $5,800 for these expenses in the fall; $9,575 in the spring.

Total Wisconsin resident cost estimate: $13,730 fall; $19,800 for spring. Cost estimates may change at any time.

Comments

"Deciding to go abroad was one of the best decisions of my life, it had me experience so many different places, and foods, and it was fun to finally see so many of the places that most people only ever see in movies." Alexandra, past participant

"Being in England was like coming back to ahome I didn't know existed." Abby, past participant

"As a business economics major, Lancaster was great. It's interesting to look at the effects of different choices made in a different economy from what is normally studied in the US. Also, the wide variety of classes allowed me to study areas that I wouldn't have been able to study in Eau Claire."
Vicki, past-participant

"The experience was great, because this is not an island program--we were really integrated into the culture. Lancaster is a great city and the university is nice, with a very diverse student population. There was always plenty to do either in town or on campus."
Carissa, past-participant

"I have unforgettable memories that will last me a lifetime. It was a fun and exciting experience; you meet lots of new and interesting people and really get a feel for the culture and begin to be a part of it."
 Julia, past-participant

"Studying abroad in Lancaster was the best decision I have ever made.  Being immersed in a new culture taught me more about myself than I had ever expected and having the opportunity to travel Europe was an experience I wouldn't trade for anything.  I can't wait to go back!
Briana, past-participant
