| The Program

Beginning Fall 2008, UW-Eau Claire students have the opportunity to study for one semester or the academic year at Payap University in Chiang Mai.
The Thai and Southeast Asian Studies Certificate Program is for students interested in becoming proficient in the Thai language and knowledgeable about Thai culture. The program offers a well-developed language curriculum, required and elective courses in a wide range of disciplines, and extensive field trips, excursions, and cultural activities. Thai Studies students explore Thailand from the inside.
Your host in Thailand is the Mae Khao campus of Payap University. With three campuses in Chiang Mai, Payap enrolls a total of 8,500 students. Visit http://www.payap.ac.th/english/ for details.
Location
Chiang Mai, a city of 250,000, is in Northern
Thailand, on a plain surrounded by mountains. The original
city, marked by a moat and ancient walls, has Buddhist
temples and other monuments to its distinguished past.
Courses
You will take six credits of 100-level Thai language (UWEC Foreign Language Elective Lower Division GE IA), a three-credit course on the Cultural Foundations of Thai Society (UWEC Anthropology Elective
Lower Division GE3), and one or two three-credit elective courses. Elective courses are generally drawn from the following subject areas: Sociology/Anthropology, Religion, History/Political Science and Fine Arts.
If you are staying the full year, you will continue with six credits of 200-level Thai langauge (UWEC Foreign Language Elective Lower Division GE IA, grade of C or higher will meet the Foreign Language competency requirement) and two or three elective courses during your second semester. Full year students may also work with Payap University faculty to develop independent study courses.
Please note that electives vary from term to term depending upon faculty availability and expertise and can only be confirmed approximately one and a half months prior to the start of each term.
More Learning Opportunities
The Thai Studies program includes several field trips and 2 short-term village homestays throughout the term. In addition, you are encouraged to get involved with one of the many student organizations on campus.
Accommodations

You will live in a dormitory within walking
distance of campus. All Thai Studies students live in this Payap-provided housing and receive some meals, as well as a monthly stipend to assist with other meals and local transportation costs. The stipend and provided meals is adequate for three meals per day in local food stalls, canteens, and restaurants.
Academic Calendar
Fall semester begins in early-to-mid-August and ends in early December. Spring semester begins in early-to-mid January and ends in early May. Exact dates are available the semester prior to departure.
Expenses
The estimated 2008-2009 Wisconsin resident fee for one semester is $6,710. This includes UW-Eau Claire tuition, CISI insurance, housing, food, excursions, and administrative fees. Minnesota residents may apply
for reciprocity, while non-residents should add non-resident fees.
Additional
costs: passport, visa, fieldtrip fee, books, personal
expenses, and airfare. Estimate an
additional $3,650 for these expenses.
Total
Wisconsin resident cost estimate: $10,367. Cost
estimates may change at any time.
Financial Aid
If you qualify
for financial aid, you can apply your aid to program
costs. Your financial aid package will be based
on actual costs in Thailand, including round-trip
airfare. Two national scholarships, the Freeman Asia and the NSEP, support study in Thailand. You can learn about additional options, including a study abroad grant
through the UW-Eau Claire Foundation; a Wisconsin Grant for Study Abroad
