| The
Program
Whether it is
the adventure of exploring one of the world's oldest civilizations
or the appeal of experiencing first-hand the world's fastest
growing economy, China has something for everyone.
Founded in 1906, Jinan University is a comprehensive institution,
composed of seven colleges: Liberal Arts, Science & Technology,
Economics, Medicine, Chinese Language and Culture, China Travel,
and Education. Its primary mission is to serve overseas Chinese
students, students from Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan, and students
of Chinese ancestry.
The main campus
of Jinan University is both lovely and self-contained. With
a bank, bakery, bookstore, post office, supermarket, photo
shop, laundromat, medical facilities, restaurants and sports
facilities, the campus has the feel of a small town within
the city. You can also get involved in a variety of student
activities.
You will have the choice of living in an air-conditioned student dormitory on the
main campus of Jinan University, in a double room, with a
Chinese roommate, or in a single or double room on the branch campus of the College of Chinese Language and
Culture.
Location
Guangzhou (formerly
Canton) is the southernmost large city in China, just north
of Hong Kong. The official language is Pu-tong-hua (Mandarin).
The local dialect is Cantonese, the same as that in Hong Kong.
As Guangzhou was one of the first cities opened to the outside
world, it is more modern than many Chinese cities. Guangdong
province, where Guangzhou is located, is where most of Chinese's
economic reforms are being piloted. It's a great place to
get a first-hand view of the major changes currently underway
as the Communist political system strives to accommodate a
market economy.
Courses
If you wish to
study Chinese language (Mandarin) intensively, you can take
a full semester of Chinese Language and Culture Courses taught
at the College of Chinese Language and Culture on the Huawen
Xueyuan campus.
You can also
choose to take some Chinese language and culture courses,
along with some economics and political science courses taught
in English at the International School on the main Jinan University
campus. For more information about the International School,
go to http://ischool.jnu.edu.cn/.
Academic
Calendar
You may study
at Jinan for a semester or the full academic year. Fall semester
begins in late August and ends in mid-January. (If you go
to Jinan for the fall semester only, you will have a very
short break between the end of fall semester and the beginning
of spring semester at UW-Eau Claire.) Spring semester begins
in late February and runs through mid-July. Exact dates will
be available the semester prior to departure.
Expenses
The estimated
Wisconsin resident program fee for one semester in 2009-20010
is $3,960. This includes full-time UW-Eau
Claire tuition, room, CISI insurance, and administrative fees.
Minnesota residents may apply for reciprocity; non-residents
add non-resident fees.
Additional costs: room, meals, passport, international or local transportation,
books, or personal expenses. Estimate another $4,600-$5,150 for these

Total Wisconsin resident cost estimate for
one semester: $8,560-$9,110. Cost estimates are based on current exchange rates and may change at any time.
Financial Aid/Scholarships
If you qualify
for financial aid, you can apply your aid to program
costs. Your financial aid package will be based on actual costs
in China, including the cost of round-trip airfare. Two national scholarships, the Freeman Asia and the NSEP, support study in China. You can learn about additional options, including a study abroad grant through the UW-Eau Claire
Foundation; a Wisconsin Grant for Study Abroad
and scholarships for specific majors and national study abroad scholarships
