An Interview with Sarah L.
Sarah L., a French major, studied  French language, literature and culture in Pau.  “The French professors were very skilled, and I felt at times comfortable, and at other times challenged in a good way, " she said.

Pau is a beautiful city with a variety of restaurants and community events, as well as a lovely view of the mountains in the distance.  Sarah became involved in a few campus Church in Paugroups and says, “I also lived with a wonderful host family, I had classes every day, and I had easy access to the city-wide bus route.”

When asked about the food, goat cheese, crunchy baguettes, cool apple cider, and chocolate pastries topped Sarah's list.  But Sarah would also recommend trying something unfamiliar.  “I picked tripes one time because I had no idea what it was. I ate long, chewy strips stewed in a buttery, herbed broth. I loved it. Then I took out my dictionary. Turns out my dish was cow intestines, but I’d eat it again if I had the opportunity!”

Sarah enjoyed the chance to travel while abroad.  “The field trips offered through the program were wonderful—we went to Toulouse, Carcassonne, Biarritz, le Pays Basque, Bordeaux, and Paris.”  She also did some independent travel during spring break to the Normandy region.

Sarah said she was changed by her experience abroad.  “I am much more confident; every day I did something that intimidated me, but you have to step out on a limb every once in a while in order to understand a foreign culture and improve your language skills.”
