An interview with Nessa S.
Nessa S., a dual Instrumental Music Education and German Education major, chose the exchange program at the University of Graz, Austria as a way to
focus on learning the German language. She found the year-long program to be an excellent way to immerse herself in Austrian culture, and to improve her German language and intercultural communication skills. Many of the courses she took at Uni Graz fulfilled requirements for her German major here.
Daily life moved at a relaxed pace, and one of Nessa’s favorite activities was visiting the local outdoor markets. “There was always a great variety of fresh produce, breads, cheeses, juice and desserts. I ate lots of sandwiches of fresh bread and cheese.”
Exploring Europe is easy from Graz, since Austria is centrally located. Nessa was able to travel to many countries during the 5-week break between semesters, including Croatia, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Italy, Luxembourg, Norway, Slovenia, Spain, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom.
Nessa said that the hardest part of studying abroad was coming home. However, she already has plans to return. “Since returning (from Graz), I have added a TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) minor, and I can’t wait to go back!”
