There are many opportunities to get involved in Graz. Upon arrival, you will meet your Austrian student mentor, who will introduce you to student life in Graz. You may also choose to join the “Tandem” program that pairs native German speakers with native English speakers for language exchange. And there are all sorts of extra-curricular activities and weekend trips through the Universitaet Sport Institute (USI). Past students note that community events were posted clearly around the dorm and in the city, making cultural experiences easily accessible. They attended operas, sporting events, plays and concerts.
EXPLORE EUROPE
Graz is a great base for exploring eastern and western Europe--and the semester break in February is a wonderful opportunity to see Europe in the off (read: cheap!) season. Hop a train to Vienna or Innsbruck. Cross the border and you're in Italy, Switzerland, Germany, the Czech Republic, Hungary, or Slovenia.

"As a German liberal arts major, studying in Graz was a great experience. The open enrollment system gave me a huge choice of classes. I improved my German and learned about Austrian and German culture and history."

"From historic Renaissance courtyards and an impressive national armory to intriguing modern architecture and inspiring art creations, there is no wonder Graz was Kulturhauptstadt 2003. Blossoming with adventures sure to spark your interest, Graz is definitely the place to be."

"For me this program was perfect. It gave me a balance of responsibility and freedom that allowed me to choose what my experience was. Also, I personally think a year is much better when traveling to a foreign country to learn the language. I felt that after 4 or 5 months I was finally fitting in and Graz was now my home. I couldn't have imagined going home at that time. It was a great program for me and I would recommend it to anyone." Andrew S.
