Employment

International students have the opportunity to work during their stay in the United States. Different work opportunties are available depending on a student's visa type.

Students may not begin to work before receving work authorization. Please see an International Student Adviser to discuss your employment opportunities.

On-campus Employment:
Students on an F-1 and J-1 visa may work on campus up to 20 hours per week (40 during school breaks) with the permission of the Center for International Education. Students must apply for a Social Security Number and complete an Employment Authorization Form.

F-1 Students:
On Campus: Students may work on campus up to 20 hours per week (40 during school breaks) with the permission of the Center for International Education. Students must apply for a Social Security Number and have a job offer. Student must complete the Employment Authorization Form and Social Security Application.

Curricular Practical Training (CPT): CPT is off-campus employment in your field of study, which your department approves for credit (internship course). Students may participate in Curricular Practical Training (CPT) through approval from the Center for International Education. Please see an International Student Adviser before you begin to apply for employment and internship possibilities.

Optional Practical Training (OPT): OPT is off-campus employment in your field of study, which is approved by the United States Citizen and Immigration Services (USCIS). Please make an appointment with an International Student Adviser at least 5 months before graduation to apply.

Note: Students in the English Language Academy are not eligible for Curricular Practical Training or Optional Practical Training.

J-1 Students:
On Campus: Students may work on campus up to 20 hours per week (40 during school breaks) with the permission of the Center for International Education. Academic Training: Academic Training allows off campus employment experiences in the student’s field of study. Students may participate in Academic Training with the permission of academic department and approval from the Center for International Education. Please make an appointment with an International Student Adviser before you begin to search for Academic Training experiences.
