POSITION:
Tenure-track faculty position in the Department of Chemistry at the rank of Assistant Professor beginning August 24, 2009. Appointment as a tenure-track Associate Professor hire may be possible in special circumstances. The initial appointment will be for two years.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Earned doctorate in any area of chemistry or closely related field required by November 10th, 2008. Salary and rank will be commensurate with experience. Area of Specialty: While applications in all areas of chemistry will be considered, preference will be given to candidates with teaching interests in Organic, Physical, or Analytical chemistry. Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate concepts in chemistry will be considered an asset. The ability to bring diverse cultural and ethnic experiences and perspectives to the campus and to serve as a role model and mentor for women and/or minorities may be considered an asset.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Applicants will be expected to teach in their primary subdiscipline; the ability to teach in more than one chemistry subdiscipline will be considered an asset. Instruction in general chemistry lecture and laboratory is also expected. The successful applicant is expected to develop a program of externally funded research; competitive start-up funds are available. In addition to teaching and collaborating with undergraduates in research, the successful applicant will provide academic advising to students as assigned, engage in service to the university and community, participate in department, college, and university committee work, and carry out other duties as assigned.
DEPARTMENT:
The Department of Chemistry at UW-Eau Claire, with 16 full-time faculty members, has a mission of providing high quality undergraduate instruction in the chemical sciences through a combination of lectures, laboratory courses, and collaborative research. Emphasis is placed on first-rate classroom teaching at all levels. The department is equipped with modern instrumentation including a gradient 400 MHz NMR with solid state capability and a TOF-LC-MS, among others. Individual research programs in chemistry are supported by a single-crystal X-ray diffractometer, a differential scanning calorimeter, a tunable dye laser, and an optical cryostat. Instruments available through the materials science center include a TEM, SEM, STM, AFM, and XPS. Tradition of Undergraduate Research at UW-Eau Claire and the Department of Chemistry
UW-Eau Claire is officially recognized within the University of Wisconsin System as the Center of Excellence in Faculty/Undergraduate Student Research Collaboration and UW-Eau Claire is an institutional member of the Council on Undergraduate Research. UW-Eau Claire is nationally recognized as one of the premier mid-western undergraduate colleges in the public and private Comprehensive University sector (U.S. News and World Report).
A strength of the department is collaborative research with undergraduates. The department was identified by Research Corporation as a national model for undergraduate research, and received Research Corporation's first Department Development Grant. Current faculty actively seek external support from major funding agencies. For example, in 2007 new grants awarded to the department totaled $1.2M in support of undergraduate research.
The fruits of this philosophy have been that about 60% of our students go on to graduate or professional schools with more than 130 completing the Ph.D since the inception of the chemistry major at UWEC. The NSF CASPAR database of Baccalaureate Origins of Chemistry Ph.D.'s has shown that in the most recent 10-year interval, the chemistry department is ranked 19th out of the 886 Comprehensive I and II (Master's) and Baccalaureate I, II (liberal arts) institutions, putting our department on par in this regard with the nation's elite liberal arts colleges. The students in our program have been admitted into graduate programs at top tier institutions such as MIT, Cornell University, U C-Berkeley, UW-Madison, and others.
