All logos, seals, wordmarks, names, symbols and slogans associated with the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire are copyright-protected trademarks and are the exclusive property of UW-Eau Claire. It is the university’s policy to commercialize its name and trademarks, and to license and sell merchandise through third-party licensees. UW-Eau Claire’s self-licensing program is administered by the University Centers.

The licensing administration office is responsible for protecting the use of UW-Eau Claire trademarks, insuring that they are presented in accordance with university graphic standards. Before production can begin on any merchandise that will bear university marks, the individual or group that wishes to place the order must first submit the artwork to the licensing office for review. The licensing manager will judge whether the art complies with university standards. Artwork must be approved before production can begin.
The licensing administration office is also responsible for licensing the commercial use of UW-Eau Claire’s copyright-protected trademarks. If the merchandise is to be sold, a licensed vendor must be used for its manufacture. Licensed vendors pay a one-time licensing fee to the university, and pay royalties on their net sales of university-trademarked merchandise.
Even if merchandise is being produced for a university office or department or a university-affiliated group, a licensed vendor must be used if the merchandise is for resale. The licensing administrator may exempt a recognized student organization from the royalty if the profit is incidental and the primary focus is to promote the organization or the university.
The use of a licensed vendor is not required if the item bearing UW-Eau Claire marks is to be given away or is not intended for resale. Artwork still must be approved by the licensing office before merchandise can be ordered.
