Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Why do we need a new Davies Center?
A: There are a number of reasons that Davies Center needs to be revamped. First, many areas of Davies Center are not up to current code. Also, student organizations have been suffering due to lack of space in Davies. Many times organizations cannot hold the events they would like to due to capacity limitations.

Q: What are the benefits of creating a new Davies Center?
A: A new Davies Center will bring new possibilities for students. Students and faculty will enjoy more space for meetings, new lounge areas, redesigned food courts, larger auditoriums, as well as the peace of mind of knowing the building is up to code and safe.

Q: Why haven’t students been a part of the process?
A: They have been. The Davies Exploratory Committee is made up of concerned students who have been working on this project since 2004. Student opinions have been requested in a number of different surveys to find out what they would like to see happen in the future and what their concerns were with the current Davies Center.

Q: How much will tuition be increased?
A: Tuition will increase only $27.50 every year until the year 2012. That means the maximum tuition increase in the final year of the project will be $135.

Q: Will the new Davies Center be in the same place?
A: It is not decided yet if Davies will be remodeled or completely rebuilt. Currently, three avenues of possibilities exist. One, tear down the current Davies Center and build a new building on the same site. Two, remodel the building that’s already in use. Three, build a new student union in an entirely new location.

Q: When will construction start?
A: Tentatively, construction will begin in late 2009 or early 2010. The process should last between two and a half to three years. Tom Holton, a member of the Davies Exploratory Committee says, “What is two and a half years for a lifetime of excellence?”

Q: Will we see the options for the new Davies Center before final plans are decided on?
A: Yes. Students and faculty will all be able to view proposed plans and give feedback on them prior to construction. Keep checking the website as more information becomes available!

Q: Are we going to lose parking?
A: No one can be sure yet. Until plans for the new Davies Center are finalized, the location of the new building will be unknown. That is why it is important for students to stay up-to-date on plans and options as they emerge.
