Graphic Designer

Position Summary:

This position reports directly to the Supervisors of University Printing Services. This position is responsible for assisting with all graphic design orders. Requirements include the technical skills to navigate the most current Mac and Windows platforms related to design software and peripherals as well as trouble-shooting techniques. Professional skills necessary to provide excellent customer service include leadership, communication, providing suggestions/ideas to customers and organizational skills.

40% A. Administer Graphic Design Department

A1. Create and set up a wide variety of material(s) to be printed/offset printed (brochures, posters, business cards, signage, labels, envelopes, letterhead, advertisements, resumes etc.)
A2. Serve as “creative consultant” to customers, which may include working “one-on-one” with customer(s). Sharing ideas about designs, color combinations, symbols or logos, paper options and platforms that will best suit the document set-up.
A3. Use and navigate the graphic design related software packages on Macintosh and PC’s including: QuarkXPress, Photoshop, Illustrator, PowerPoint, Publisher, Word, Excel & Epson Scanner platforms (TextBridge). (Font suitcase and clip art software.)
A4. Direct the flow of projects in the graphics area by due dates: complete each project in a manner that allows time for proofing, copying, printing and/or other operations/services as needed.
A5. Communicate effectively with customers and co-workers to ensure correct job completion.
A6. Produce neat, professional layouts, keeping in mind the elements of good design.
A7. Maintain and trouble-shoot equipment, organize materials and monitor inventory in and around the graphic design area. Keep graphic design work area neat and orderly.
A8. Assist the Offset Pressman with pre-press preparations (ie: plates, fonts, placement(s) and troubleshooting documents).

30% B. Market Printing Services to Patrons

B1. Evaluate and make recommendations to management concerning focus/direction of services.
B2. Create promotional materials for sales, special events, signage, employee recruitment and general marketing of products & services offered by the Copy Corner.

25% C. Execute Services, Policies and Procedures

C1. Possess a working knowledge of current Printing Services prices and policies.
C2. Provide customer service at the window and direct customer requests for various services (ie: offset printing, copying, design work, bindery) to the appropriate area and/or person(s).
C3. Maintain time frames for services and communicate that information effectively to the customer(s).
C4. Check completed customer requests for accuracy and by verifying that all functions have been completed and accurately priced.
C5. Fill out Printing Services order forms completely and accurately.
C6. Distribute completed services to patrons; collect payment and enter transaction(s) on cash registers.
C7. Perform services for customers to include black & white and/or color copying, laminating, binding, padding, cutting, collating & stapling, folding.
C8. Provide assistance at the window as well as with Customer Service orders and opening & closing procedures.
