Farm Life Adventure

August 4: Milk House
Follow milk’s journey from the cow to you! Find out how farmers milked
before electricity and how they continue this tradition in new ways today.
An area farm family will bring cows from their herd for you to meet and
we’ll make milk mustache photos and milkshakes!
August 5: Tractors & Technology
How did farm families work in the fields before tractors were invented?
Explore early farm tools and machines to learn how technology has
changed over 100 years. We’ll play horseshoes and hold a husking
bee competition!

changed over 100 years. We’ll play horseshoes and hold a husking
bee competition!
August 7: Threshing Ring
Join a threshing ring to learn ways that farm families and their neighbors
worked, played and celebrated together. Journey to these families’ community
gathering places to try out the cakewalk, play old-fashioned card and
dice games, and dance to old-time dancehall tunes.
August 8: Farmyard Fun
Visit a 1950s chicken coop to see how farmers used “egg money” to keep
their dairy farms going. Explore the farm garden, learn ways that farmers
preserved fresh food, and see what’s cooking in the farmhouse kitchen.
We’ll make refrigerator pickles and have a farmyard scavenger hunt.

Time Travelers

August 11: Digging up the Past
Imagine living at the time of the mastodons, saber-toothed tigers, and other
early inhabitants of North America. Learn about archaeology and join our
artifact laboratory adventure. We’ll explore fossils, watch flint knapping
demonstrations, and eat “dirt pudding.”
August 12: Visiting the Voyageurs
Many early explorers of the Chippewa Valley participated in fur trapping
and trading. Investigate trade goods in our collection, then visit our
trading post and learn how to barter. We’ll see a voyageur re-enactment,
build model canoes, and enjoy maple sugar snow cones.
August 13: Living on the Lumber Frontier
Before computers and electricity were available, families relied on their
own skills and power to build a way of life. Visit an 1860s log home to
discover how families lived before “modern conveniences.” We’ll learn
to spin wool, make coaster-sized rag rugs and watch a beekeeping demonstration.
We’ll even have time to sample some cornbread and honey!
August 14: Coming of Age in Victorian Days
As the turn-of-the-century approached, the invention of telephones,
indoor plumbing, electric lights, and other wonders were making life more
comfortable. Step inside the Schlegelmilch House to discover how families
lived in this time. We’ll play parlor games, watch a shadow puppet show,
race walnut shell sailboats, and taste deviled eggs and cheesecake.
August 15: Fun & Games of the 1920s & ‘30s
The “Roaring Twenties” and “Dirty Thirties” were periods of great highs and
lows for American families. Experience the excitement of the Jazz Age through
music, dance, film and food. Explore how families learned to make do during
the Great Depression. We’ll make secret decoder badges and mini-jigsaw
puzzles, play Tiddley Winks, and watch a vintage Mickey Mouse cartoon.
