Home > Programs > Personal Enrichment > Writing and Publishing for Children
How long have you harbored a desire to write or even publish a children’s story? In this workshop, you will explore the writing process, from the first creative spark of a story idea to seeing it in print. The emphasis will be on telling a story in a way that will engage a young reader (or listener), and it will also be on telling the kinds of stories that you yourself would enjoy reading. We will consider certain story forms (including picture books and fairy/folk tales) that are well suited to a young audience. Additionally, we will discuss the importance of preparatory research, and we will do some writing. The final segment of the workshop will focus on what to do once you have the completed manuscript: how to find an agent and/or publisher, how to work with an illustrator, and how to have some control over the publishing process. The goal of the workshop is at least two-fold: to take some of the mystery out of writing and publishing for children, and to impress on participants that writing for young readers is both hard work and a great joy.
