Home > Programs > Personal Enrichment >Exploring the Glacial Landscape of Chippewa County
A powerful glacier almost half a mile thick shaped Chippewa County’s beautiful landscape where today we hunt, fish, hike, camp and live! On this excursion, you’ll not only learn about the unique glacial geology of the Chippewa County from Dr. Kent Syverson, a prominent expert in the field, you’ll also learn how a glacial geologist unravels the geologic history “puzzle” by observing the landscape, collecting data, and studying “dirt.” After the first field stops and commentary about the landscape, you’ll start “reading” the land on your own. The coach tour will include stops that introduce geologic evidence for oceans, volcanoes and glaciers that once existed right here in Wisconsin! Likely field stops will include: Town of Wheaton, Bob Lake area, the Chippewa Moraine Ice Age Reserve Visitor’s Center, Plummer Lake area, Flambeau Ridge, and Otter Lake County Park. Visiting these sites will require participants to get on and off the coach bus and to walk short distances to and from the observation points. There will be no physically demanding terrain or extensive hiking involved. Join us for this exciting learning opportunity and enjoy the fall foliage along the way!
