Explorations in Biblical Archeology I

(Offered again by popular demand)!

Genuine archaeological discoveries, as well as hoaxes have fueled interest in the study of Biblical Archaeology. Not only will you examine the science, history, and tradition surrounding some of the world’s most exciting archaeological finds such as the Dead Sea Scrolls at Qumran, and the Cave of Letters in the Judean desert, but you’ll learn about the physical and political challenges archaeologists and researchers must meet to reach these remote and sometimes dangerous sites. Also, you’ll learn about the ancient city of Bethsaida, home of the apostles and one of King David’s wives, as well as exciting new ideas on the location of Mount Sinai. Dr. Harry Jol will guide you through the hard facts, background, and the mystery surrounding some of Biblical Archaeology's most fascinating discoveries. In 2007, Jol began investigations at a proposed site for Mt. Sinai – you’ll be among the first to hear and discuss preliminary results from this expedition.

Harry Jol: Connecting Campus and Community

Dr. Harry Jol, Professor of Geography and Anthropology at UW-Eau Claire, is known widely for his use of ground penetrating radar (GPR) at numerous archaeological sites worldwide. GPR allows archaeologists to survey sites prior to excavation. Jol has worked on sites in Israel for the past 8 years. Some sites include: Cave of Letters (Judean Desert), Qumran, Temple Mount in Jerusalem, Nazareth, and Bethsaida. The ancient city of Bethsaida is the most frequently mentioned town in the New Testament. Jol is also an Associate Researcher with the Bethsaida Excavations Project in Israel. Jol’s GPR work in the Cave of Letters, Qumran, (the location where the Dead Sea Scrolls were discovered) and on a 2000 year-old bath-house site in Jesus’ Nazareth have brought his work wide acclaim with reporting appearing in TIME Magazine, USA Today, and on The BBC, MSNBC, and NOVA to name a very few.
